an interesting version with a precise conducting, beautiful singing from mme berganza but the dialogues are completly flat and most of the time with a terrible accent.
the wedding scene is still a must to hear in a perfect "Offenbachien" style: fast and witty.

SUPERB, WHETHER AS GRAND OPERA OR OPERETTA,

A favorite of mine, ever since my father started appreciating opera, as either a graduation or degeneration from baroque/classical orchestral/instrumental music. He ended up loving the operettas of Strauss, Lehar, and especially Offenbach. His favorite was La Perichole. I bought this recording knowing the vocal qualities of Theresa Berganza and Jose Carreras and loving the score. I listened to it three times in succession while driving to and from surveying jobs. I then loaned it to me sister, who told me she had listened to it twice all the way through and twice in part (having a husband and daughter who do not appreciate opera) and enjoyed it extremely. We both had to sing to certain parts.
If you like Gilbert and Sullivan, this is the French version of the genre for you. Jaques Offenbach, or Jacob der Offenbacher, is the composer for you, and this is the best version of the best operetta he wrote. The singing is worthy of La Scala or the Met, and the music is catchy, fun, and worthy of the best of the classical opera repretoire. It is a great recording, and you will enjoy it if you like listening to Wagner and Verdi, or Rodgers and Hammerstein. |
