One Of The Greats 14 Nov 2005
Format:DVD
This is one of the greatest ever adaptations of Offenbach's Orfeo Aux Enfers. From beginning to end the play was spectacular, full of colour and vibrancy. Minkowski's music was as close to perfect as one can get and the comedy gave it edge other operas lack. This is one opera every one must own or at least see in their life. Truly memorable!!

This production of Orphée aux Enfers make the operetta seem like it was written today, delivering a contemparary, fresh impact. The entire performance is very comic and dynamic with brilliant choreography, and gotten more laughter from me then several recent comedies I’ve seen. Both the stage design and customs are excellent and add to the enjoyment of the production.
The cast perform superbly and excel both in singing and acting, I especially enjoyed Natalie Dessay as Eurydice, Laurent Naouri as Jupiter, Martine Olméda as Public Opinion and especially the excellent Cassandre Berthon as Cupid.

Technically the DVD delivers superb clear and crisp picture and excellent DTS sound to match.

This is a version that will also appeal to people who do not regularly watch operettas (as witnessed by a friend, not so keen about operettas, who peeked and stayed till the very end – laughing all the way).

Joie-de-vivre 4 Oct 2003
Format:DVD
Châtelet, director Pelly and conductor Minkowski sure have a way with Offenbach. As with their 'Belle Hélène' you find none of the usual operetta stupidity and facetiousness, and the whole things abounds with sprightly, musically intelligent joie-de-vivre. The singers, not least the vocally and scenically virtuosic Dessay as well as Steven Cole as the seedy John Styx, are marvellous, lighting is a revelation, the sets are ever evocative, the transfer is ideal. What else can I say?

This production is typically French as it should be for a French composer. The solo performers are all excellent(I particularly liked Cupidon).

Very enjoyable and typical of the Minkowski set
This production is one of three Offenbach operettas that Minkowski has conducted. All have been notable for great energy and attention to detail. Read more

Great Stuff
The bad? I have seen plenty of transvestites around, but to get them in here is rather overkill - even if it is a French production. Read more

It is hard to imagine this Offenbach being better directed and sung than in this production. Raised as I was on the old Wendy Toye Sadlers Wells production this also encapsulates... Read more

Very good radical new production
I have enjoyed watching and listening to this but I don't think is is quite as good 'entertainment value' as La Vie Parisienne' which I would give 5* PLUS! Read more

Unexpected dance scenes
The music was fine. The sets and costumes very good. I was left cold by the unexpected males playing the part of females in the chorous line. Read more
