Product Description

Product Description

In a fascinating study, the reader is presented with a detailed description and analysis of Offa's Dyke, set against the background of the political and social context of the kingdom of Mercia, over which King Offa ruled from 757 to 796. This new interpretation of the Dyke's line, length and purpose is offered in the light of extensive research by the authors who have over 50 years' experience between them. It will appeal to all, including academics, amateur historians and archaeologists, as well as those visiting the area, including walkers of the Dyke itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, authoritative account of Offa's Dyke, 8 Sep 2008
By Dave Essery - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Offa's Dyke (Tempus History & Guide) (Paperback)
This is a very easy to read but authoritative account of a somewhat poorly understood monument, and I can imagine it will be the definitive work for some time to come.

It is written by archaeologists who have spent much of their careers excavating the monument, and so have first hand knowledge from the field and an obvious enthusiasm for their subject and its place in the landscape.

The book is divided into two main sections. The first discussed the current remains of the Dyke, and the archaeological evidence from those areas that have beem excavated. The second discusses the evidence that allows up to reason why it might have been built, how it was done and how it functioned. This adds a lot of substance to what was previously a poorly understood monument.

The only criticism I would have of this volume is the paucity of photographs of the Dyke itself. It would have been neat to have a few good colour pictures of the Dyke in its scenic surrounds, perhaps this could be improved on for a future addition.

Regards - Dave Essery www.ancientdave.com
