Book Description

Humorous thriller. Back cover: Aline Alexandre does not relish the prospect of spending the August bank holiday weekend in a secluded spot in Cornwall doing team-building exercises with her glum investment-banking colleagues. What promises to be a dull weekend soon turns into a nightmare. A mystery illness, a narrowly avoided accident, anonymous threats and a gruesome find point to a cat among the pigeons. Could the disconcerting events be connected to a tragedy that took place many years ago on Moorland Manor, the run-down country residence belonging to Aline’s line manager, where the group is staying? Before she has a chance to unravel the mystery, she finds herself trapped in a dark room. Suddenly, she has become more dependent on her colleagues than she had ever thought possible in order to reach her most important goal: to get out alive… Off-site is a humorous thriller that keeps up the suspense throughout, until the surprise denouement. It also contains an element of satire on the dysfunctional aspects of corporate life. Set entirely in a picturesque coastal village in England, with all the action taking place over a single weekend, it is intended for readers who like to get thoroughly spooked, but who prefer happy endings.

More About the Author

Marietta Miemietz was born in Germany. She has spent 15 years working in the financial services industry, mainly as a pharmaceutical equity research analyst, in the US, Germany and most recently, the UK. She has wanted to be a writer since she learned to read and write and always carries a notebook to capture funny or bizarre anecdotes. She likes to write books that are entertaining, upbeat, humorous, packed with suspense and unexpected developments and that have a happy ending. Portraying interesting and endearing characters is her first priority. During her many years in investment banking, she has met many talented and entrepreneurial people, as well as some annoying and crazy specimens. One day, she took a walk and thought about how much more exciting it would be if one of the latter was a dangerous psychopath; the idea for her first thriller "Off-site" was born. The protagonist, Aline, has some auto-biographical features; all of the other characters, events and places are purely fictitious, but never far-fetched. Marietta speaks several languages and is working on the German and French translations for "Off-site", as well as a new thriller.
"Off-site" is available in Kindle format on amazon.co.uk; it is also available as a paperback on amazon.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marietta's mushroom murder mayhem 26 Nov. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Off-site by Marietta Miemietz is like no other book I have ever read. It involves city bankers a long way outside their comfort zone ... a comfort zone which has been heavily squeezed in recent times. The rich folklore and dramatic weather, with thunderous waves crashing on the rocky coast is enough to spook the locals - easily a cocktail for mind games with a bunch of city types. Marietta exploits this heady mixture with a light-hearted, almost surreal thriller. There's a grisly murder and our heroine sinks her toes into the blood-soaked corpse. Will she be next on the crazed madman's list? Lots of fun. Worth a read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written 16 Sept. 2012
By Eagle
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Miss Mieiemitz should stick to her day job. This was neither humourous nor thrilling and the denouement could be seen a mile off. The book has been poorly written - there are grammatical errors and there is no natural flow to the writing. I would not recommend this.

Superbly written, this book will keep you turning the page to seek the next suspense. At 51-pages it is a swift read, but is packed with humerous musings of a research analyst which will offer you a glimpse of a dysfunctional investment banking organization, in an unlikely setting of an old run-down mansion in Cornwall. It is a thriller, but of a lighthearted sort, and will lure you to a happy ending that will leave you waiting for the author's next sequel. P.S. You don't have to be involved in the industry to enjoy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 22 April 2012
By Rossitza Haritova - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A very light and enjoyable read which captures to perfection the psychology, politics and dynamics of the world of investment banking. The plot is both gripping and entertaining and the suspense builds up quickly; you will not want to put the book aside until you have finished it. A must-read for everyone who considers a career in the industry as well as those who are already a part of it and believe that their problems at work are unique. The ideal feel-good gift for any garden leave holidays.

What a fun read. Anyone who likes thrillers will enjoy Off-site and anyone who has ever had to give up their weekend for an "team building" exercise will empathize. I really enjoyed the Cornwall setting which added to the mystery. I look forward to Ms. Miemietz's next book.

An entertaining, fast-paced and humorous read! Each character is well crafted and, even more importantly, quite a few of them captivate the reader with their humour! The suspense, moreover, keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen next! Highly recommended to all! And I look forward to the author's next book!
