Amazon.co.uk Review

Off the Wall made music history. Not only was it the release that signaled the arrival of Michael Jackson as a major talent outside the Jackson Five, it was the first record by a solo artist to contain four US Top 10 hits. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", "Rock with You", "Off the Wall", and "She's out of My Life" were essential listening in the late 1970s and early '80s. The release also contains the kinetic "Working Day and Night" and "Burn This Disco Out", and Paul McCartney contributes "Girlfriend". Thanks to Quincy Jones's production, it was still all about the music back then. The artistry Jackson exhibited on Off the Wall still amazes. Avoiding the shallow excesses of most of the period's disco, Jackson's dance rhythms here are made all the more powerful by Jackson's vocal restraint. --Steve Gdula

BBC Review

1979's Off The Wall is one of the finest pop albums ever made and showcases Michael Jackson as a gifted and versatile vocalist, comfortable performing on ballads as well as upbeat disco tracks.

Although Michael had previously released four solo albums as part of the Jackson 5 franchise on Motown, it was this, his first album on Epic that would break him as a worldwide superstar.

In collaborating with producer Quincy Jones, Off The Wall found Jackson using his newly found creative freedom by departing from his previous Motown sound, instead opting for an album that combined disco, soul, pop, soft rock and funk influences. Additional to Jones' polished, professional productions, Michael Jackson collaborated with some of the finest songwriters of the time, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Rod Temperton. As a result, Off The Wall became the first album ever to spawn four Billboard Top Ten singles: Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Off The Wall and She's Out Of My Life.

Since it's release, Off The Wall has sold over fifteen million copies and many critics believe as an album it has not been bettered by any of Michael Jackson's subsequent output. --David O'Donnell

When the United States Postal Service's "Celebrate the Century Express" train stopped in my hometown during September 2000, the songs coming from the outdoor speakers were those from this album, including "Girlfriend" and "It's the Falling in Love". This was fitting, because "Off the Wall" is one of the finest pop albums of the 20th century. Produced by Quincy Jones, who also produced George Benson's magnificent 1980 album "Give Me the Night", the album is enjoyable from start to finish, with 10 solid songs that deserved their popularity among radio listeners and rollerskaters. In his autobiography "Moonwalk", Jackson described Jones as "the best producer I could have asked for" and explained how the two felt it was important to "capture passion and strong feelings in a recorded performance." They succeeded in their quest. Michael's singing is brilliant. Bassist Louis Johnson plays as well as Chic's bassist Bernard Edwards. The rhythm section varies the beats at various parts of a song so that they don't end up being monotonous. And the guitar players are great, too. The songs "Rock With You" and "Off the Wall" have solid grooves that can be listened to repeatedly with great enjoyment. The vocalists and musicians on this album are masters of the R&B, disco, and pop genres.

In my opinion, simply the best record ever released by Michael Jackson. At this time it was all about the music and less about the flashy show. Absolute classics abound from the amazing 'Don't stop 'til you get enough' (My all time favourite Jackson track), to the smooth Rock with you' as well as the title track and 'She's out of my life'. One of the best tracks on here wasn't even a single: the soft, sensual 'I can't help it' is a real gem. One of the best (if not the best) album of the late 70's/early 80's disco era, this album has aged far less than any other offering of the same period. A must for fans of Jackson and indeed those who like their soul/R&B the old fashioned way.

This is by far the best Michael Jackson every got. Although his next album, Thriller remains one of the most successful albums of all time, I would much rather be stuck in a room with this one playing. There are some absolute classics included on this cd, from "Don't stop til you get enough" to "Working day and night", there are some gems here. A friend of mine actually bought this just a few years ago - although we both had the lp as children - and were astonished at how much we still enjoyed this music. Michael Jackson has obviously changed dramatically since these days and it is an incredible shame - he used to release great music that was universally adored.
