5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and inspiring..., 25 Oct 2004
By Ben Cooper - See all my reviews

The authors of Off the Rails take turns to write this book, writing alternate chapters - you soon find out why, as they spend most of the trip arguing ;-) It's a clever way to do it, though, as you can sometimes get both sides of events.
The journeys of these two young Australians is very inspiring - they learn Russian to fit in properly, and this is not one of those intensive, well-supported bike tours - they travel on a shoestring, surviving on what they can buy or borrow from locals, and making some firm friends on the way.
I travelled in Siberia 15 years ago - this brought a lot of it back. The two authors have different personalities and writing styles, but what they share is a talent for describing scenery and events well, without cliches or flowery writing.
This is one of those books that truly inspires you to try something similar...

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 men, 4 wheels and a lotta miles to cover!, 6 April 2005

Fascinating, any experience on a bike is amazing. It's the best way to travel and meet people. Not shielded behind the windows of a car, you can share their experiences battling against the weather and each other (at times).

5.0 out of 5 stars What a BRILLIANT book !!!, 28 Sep 2009
I loved this book. That this journey was undertaken on recumbant bicycles is hilarious. It is/was clearly a "Mountain bike" journey. The terrain was that tough. Reading this, some may find the lows, AKA: The Arguements, a little off-putting but to me ? They are just the harsh reality of "Life On The Road". Living in each others pockets will test the most resolute of individuals I think. As the book goes along, you realise these boys are slowly morphing into men. Tales of Babushka's, eating goats ears and then promptly chucking it up a hill away from the "ger", only to be caught doing so by your ex host had me laughing out loud. Good on you lads. An amazing journey. You should be well proud of yourselves. To this day, these man are still firends. When you go through such a journey, I would imagine you are forever linked whether you like it or not. BRILLIANT STUFF and ? A MUST READ !!!!
