Product Description

Product Description
In "Off the Page" today's best writers reveal their secrets, tell us how they work and give insight into their writing process. Paul Auster, Martin Amis, Gish Jen, Dan Chaon, Alice McDermott and many others have been interviewed on washingtonpost.com's "Off the Page" series and now host Carole Burns has woven their wisdom into chapters illuminating to the writer or reader. She asks how place influences authors, how they make a sex scene work and how they tell when the work is done. They discuss how they approach a new novel; whether they start with plot, character or theme. A.S. Byatt starts with colour. E.L. Doctorow begins with an image. Here is Walter Mosley defying genre, Shirley Hazzard on love and Michael Cunningham on compassion. This and more from Richard Ford, Jhumpa Lahiri and Charles Baxter will deepen the reader's appreciation for the art of writing and excite them to try new ways of writing.

About the Author
* CAROLE BURNS is the host of "Off the Page" on washingtonpost.com. She has published in literary journals and is writing her first novel. She teaches at the University of Winchester.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential, 8 Feb 2008
This book provides a comfort to all budding writers/ or writers that don't realise that they have actually reached this status. It gives encouragement because if you 'write then you are'. I found it very insightful, perhaps because it there were no surprises.........it normalises the act of writing, it makes it all make sense.
The editorial was well written, without any flowery excesses, an easy read and a must for all writers.Highly recommended and I feel that it should be part of the English curriculum, for no other reason than it manages to quantify the mysteries of writing.

1.0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't., 29 May 2009
By E. Maclachlan (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a ragbag, a scissors-and-paste job, of random thoughts by random writers, strung together by witless comments by the editor.
A sample of the editor's intuitions: 'Words, sentences, phrases, structure, image, voice (are) the fun stuff of writing.'
Oh please.
