As someone who lived in NYC for 8 years and prided herself on really knowing the city, this book was a welcome surprise. I was apprehensive about it at first - had been burned too many times by so-called "exclusive" NYC guide books that provided information on such "secret" spots as the Empire State building and Macys.
But this book is fantastic! Ms Resiman really captures little quirky places in the city. How she found them all is beyond me (I had not heard of 75% of them). The book covers all 5 boroughs of NYC. In addition to providing directions on how to get to each via public transportation, Ms Resiman also points out local eateries and areas of interest near the attractions.
And what attractions! Whether you're a runner interested in seeing the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, a Jazz aficionado who wants to visit Louis Armstrong's house, or someone who would like to truly sample everything New York City has to offer away from the throngs of tourists in Times Square (The Lower East Side Troll Museum? The Steinway and Sons Piano Factory? The Hall of Fame for Great Americans?), this book is for you. Best of all, it reads like a novel, albeit a humorous one. Never before have I read a guide book cover to cover.
A great gift for anyone who lives in NYC or who is going to travel there.
