This is not a literary novel, nor is it a great book, but it's a cracking read, hence the four stars. The plot boils along at a brisk pace, and the characters and relationships are believable (I especially liked the handicapped boy Edward, and his relationship with his mother). My one complaint - and it's a big one - is the ending. A surprise, certainly, but it takes away the pleasure of everything else turning out well, and asks some uncomfortable questions about the future for the other main characters. This type of novel needs a happy ending, and in doing what she's done, the author has spoiled hers. Having said that, I'm surprised that this book appears to be unavailable new from Amazon, as it certainly bears reading and recommending.
