4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, imaginative science fiction 22 Dec 2004

I came to this book when I was nine years old, and it has stayed with me ever since. Although Clarke's reputation as the greatest living SF author has been diminished slightly by the awful '3001', newcomers should read this collection as an introduction to his genius. Each story is beautifully written, and as JB Priestley says in the introduction there is a real suggestion of 'strangeness' in these tales. They can be horrific ('The Nine Billion Names of God'), wistful ('Robin Hood FRS'), and even wonderfully funny ('Trouble with the Natives'). This really is a great collection, well worth reading.

Another classic from the father of sci-fi. Yes, his books have 'Out of the Silent Planet' by CS Lewis to thank for some of their inspiration but this is another quite stunning piece of masterly writing from the late Arthur C Clarke. These stories date back decades but are totally relevant today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book! 5 Feb 2013

Awesome set of short stories. An ideal introduction to the weird and wonderful world of Arthur C. Clarke.

The first time I read this it blew my mind! Written in a way that sucks you in from the very beginning, and (unlike much so called sci-fi) is simple and easy to understand. The stories are masterpieces of the "twist in the tail", the characters are more than believable, it amused, stunned and moved me in equal measure.

This is, my all time number one, favourite ever book.
