Product Description

Of Sluices and Sisters: Anecdotes of Student Nurses at a London Teaching Hospital Follows the trials and tribulations of a set of student nurses training at an elitist Teaching Hospital in the 1960's as they deal with legendary ward sisters, petty rules, challenging patients, and eccentric doctors. It includes many stories - some poignant, many very amusing - which give an insight into what nurse training was like in those days.

An amusing book 2 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
I very much enjoyed reading this book. Some of the anecdotes had me laughing out loud. My mother is a retired R.N. who did her nurse's training during the 1950's at a hospital in San Francisco. It was interesting to compare the stories in this book to stories my mother told of her training. Anyone would find this book amusing, even without any previous knowledge of medicine.

I would recommend this not only to those of us who remember "old-style" nursing, but to those who could not even imagine it. This was one of the last "Sets" of nurses (in the late sixties) to undergo the full rigours of tradional Bart's training - petty restrictions and an exhausting life, but as this account shows(with contributions from other members of the "Set"), high standards of discipline, skill and commitment. Not only an entertaining read, but a fascinating reminder of a vanished era.

A very amusing insight into a world that I only had glimpses of, being a patient as a child in a local hospital in London. Certainly not 'Bart's' but I can imagine the Sister of the Ward may possibly have trained there. Alison Collins' anecdotes had me chuckling along to the antics of her and her friends and the stories of their encounters. A good read!
