Excellent picturebook bio of a Hypatia of Alexandria 1 Feb. 2011
By IIJuan12 - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I love finding picture book biographies that engage younger children yet provide substantial information. This is a gem! Hypatia was a young woman know for her wisdom and scholarship in 4th century BC, a time when very few women were teachers. One of her students was Synesius, who developed the astrolabe. This book has delightful illustrations and only a few sentences per page, so my 2, 4, and 8 year olds all enjoyed this book and learned something from it. We read it while studying astronomy as Hypatia learned much while studying the planets and stars.

Finally 8 Feb. 2013

OMG do we forget about this lady! She is one of the most important philosophers and mathematicians of the Ancient world and, as most women, her name is absent in the history books our children read. It was about time a book about her story was written for children.

Excellent book for toddlers and young children. The story is perfect for kids. It starts when Hypatia was a little girl and through out a very sweet story of her life and her passion for mathematics and astronomy. Very appealing for kids to get interested in numbers and shapes. My two year old loves it!
If Hypatia's era was c. AD 350 – 370 ... 13 Mar. 2015

Format: Hardcover
If Hypatia's era was c. AD 350 – 370; died 415, how could Socrates write about her when his era was c. 470 BCE–c. 399 BCE? That places them nearly 600 years apart.
