5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent revision guide 26 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my GCSE controlled assessment and my exam, and it has been immensely helpful.

The book, which is excellently structured and very well written, is divided into 6 parts: Introduction, Plot and Action, Characters, Key Contexts and Themes, Language and Structure, and Grade Booster. The first part gives revision advice and an overview of the characters and setting. The second, Plot and Action, gives a two page plot summary for the whole novella before giving a two page summary for every chapter which contains the key events and detailed language analysation and themes, as well as examiners' tips. The third part gives detailed information about each character and useful quotes backed up by explanations, along with detailed examiners' tips. The fourth part, Key Contexts and Themes, provides information on the period of time the book was written in and the key themes that Steinbeck places in his novella, "Dreams", "Prejudice" and "Loneliness" for example. Part Five gives the reader an idea of the literary devices Steinbeck uses to give meaning to the book, including information about the novella's structure. The concluding part of the revision guide gives exam advice and information about how to write a literature essay. The book is rounded off by a page with definitions of literary terms, a very useful addition to the book.

Scattered throughout the whole revision guide are useful revision questions and activities, and examiners' advice. This book, better than the CGP equivalent in my opinion, will not be the key to your GCSE sucess—no book can write your essay for you and you cannot parrot off A* essays—but I would thoroughly recommend it to anybody, no matter what grade you are aiming for, because it contains detailed, invaluable advice which complements class notes and ultimately helps you get the best grade you can.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok... 28 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My opinion is that I felt the reviews left me with my hopes too high, hence why I am disappointed...
The good points is the fact that this revision guide manages to covers all the main points like animal imagery, american dream, symbolism, structure - foreshadowing and the form as a 'Play Novelle'
However I didn't think this guide went into the kind of detail I was hoping for, infact the detail is quiet minimal for example some of the important quotes such as when Candy says:
'I should of shot that dog myself' the revision guide just explains Candy's loss and guilt - when infact my English teacher told us that the line STICKS to george because in the end George loves Lennie so much that he wants to be the one to shoot him and end Lennie's misery.

Therefore I think this guide is only to C/B detail, moreover this guide only states the bare basics of what you need to know, so I'd say that if you're looking for high quality work then only buy this guide to jot down references while in class, otherwise it in my opinion is a waste of money - because in the end this guide didn't teach you anything, furthermore, you find yourself back at square one relying on yourself to remember what quotes and elements of the novel mean.
In conclusion its OK depending on what grade and detail you are capable of putting into your work, but I think it would be better to listen in class jot notes, or if your really stuck then I suggest searching on the internet on websites like 'Spark Notes' / or buy another quide just not this one...
