'Riveting . . . Nicol is a superb storyteller, with vibrant characters and stunningly vivid dialogue'
THE TIMES on OF COPS & ROBBERS

'I think I may have read the best crime novel of the year . . . makes most Scandi-crime look as if it's been set in Legoland'
SHOTS MAGAZINE on OF COPS & ROBBERS

'Some of the best crime fiction you could read . . . everything about [Nicol's] writing is sure-footed'
THE SUNDAY TIMES'

'Superlative talent . . . Explosive, topical and corruscating, this lifts the lid off the other side of the African dream'
MAXIM JAKUBOWSKI

'This is not just superb genre writing: it is superb writing, period . . . Read Mike Nicol now, before everyone else starts telling you how wonderful he is'
JOHN CONNOLLY

'Shady characters, twists, turns, murder, mayhem, humour, wonderful dialogue, white-knuckle pace and lots of authentic Cape Town colour . . . Everything I love about the genre in just the right amount'
DEON MEYER

'World class . . . pace, wonderful characters and brilliant dialogue'
ELLE

'Welcome to a late-capitalist world of death squads, dirty politics and drug deals . . . The classic opening passage sets a high standard of bloody poetics which is maintained throughout'
LITNET

'Compelling . . . terrific dialogue, and Nicol's Cape Town is cool, dangerous, full of humour and very far from its touristy image . . . Black Heart paints a vivid portrait of the moral confusion of post-apartheid society.'

I wasn't quite sure of what was going on at first as it is set both in the past and the present, however, it all comes together perfectly at the end.
A really good read that gives the non-South African a good feel of what it must be like to live in a country that in many ways is definitely 1st world, but in others (corruption, political violence) is definitely 3rd.

A complex story of chickens coming home to roost and the reader not knowing who are the good guys or the bad except surfer dude Fish an erstwhile investigator, one of the former but who can behave like the latter as any tough PI can do. Not that this tale involves stereotypes. If this is your introduction to this author you must read the previous trilogy.

This is a great read ,good plot , good characters, great pace . This man obviously knows the underbelly of SA politics vis a vis the police and politicians and the crime that permeates the society . I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good ,believable thriller that holds up ,not like some that are so far fetched you are shaking your head in disbelief .
