Biography

Formed as a quartet in Chicago in 1998 and relocated to Los Angeles three years later, OK Go (Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Dan Konopka, Andy Ross) have spent their career in a steady state of transformation. The four songs of the all-new Upside Out EP represent the first preview of Hungry Ghosts, due out in the fall on the band’s own Paracadute. This is the band’s fourth ... OK Go have been away for a few years, and come back with an album that on first listening seems a bit overblown and hard to reconcile with their (also good) previous two albums.

By overblown I am referring to the production by long time Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann, there's more distortion, more effects, more experimental twiddles and well, more of everything. Throwing this together with a band that has some excellent lyrics and catchy melodies is at first a bit baffling as the production threatens to smother some good songs trying to get out.

After a few listens the confusion parts like the magicians curtain and it starts to make sense, songs take a little more work to tune into but when you do you realise that OK Go has bravely taken a great leap forward from their previous album and this huge orchestral mess becomes a wall of sound proppelling the songs to new heights.

I can't help feeling there was an album between this one and their last that would make the missing link, sadly there is no such album so fans of the previous albums may be in for a shock, but trust me it's worth it.

This is brilliant album if you into the sound of electronic funk. There are so many highlights and the band are clearly inspired by the early to mid 1980's Prince of the Purple New Generation band funky rock inspired sound. In fact, it so close all is that is missing would have been the obligatory 808 drum sound from the twin cities of Minneapolis and St Paul's. But we're talking about OK GO here. "WTF" and especially "White Knuckles" are examples of this flattery. "Needing" is a gem of alternative rock idea; especially the trilly and tremolo introduction right at the beginning, and then there is that gorgeous surprise, a time signature of 3/4 or is it 6/7. Well I'm not good of enough as a musician. If anything the sound on the album, the bass could done with better mastering in the mix. It is a little bit of jar for in-ear headphone for some bass heavy tracks, I have turn the volume down to 4/10 on my iPhone where every other tune is 5/10.

Other stand out groves are "In The Glass" and "Skyscraper". I think if you are a software engineer and designer like me and like hacking and coding to quality music, you can go no wrong with buying this album and that is without knowing about the award winning videos. Lyrically this is no Carole King, so look elsewhere for that sound writing emotional soring inspiration, but it you are into creative pop musical ideas, chorus and harmony and some call and response then this could be for you.

I'm a bit of an OK GO fan so the review is a little bit weighted on the possitive side. The boys have created another top record. Great tunes, intelligent lyrics and Damian growling them out does the job for me. You've probably heard 'This Too Shall Pass' and 'White Knuckles' and seen the vids. Give the others a go, they don't dissapoint. Also the sleeve notes are a gas for the geekily orientated party bores who feed off obscure trivia.

I first heard about OK GO from my brother-in-law when he sent me the links for some of their videos, and I was hooked from the word GO...!
A bit of a mixture of sounds, but nonetheless a great album.
On first hearing the whole thing, I was busy doing some other things around the house, and didn't really listen to it properly. But after listening to it in my car, with no distractions, I enjoyed just about the whole album, although there are 4 tracks that jumped out at me as brilliant. I obtained the extra nice edition, and there are some great tracks that give you an insight into the band.
I don't buy CDs very often, so I get quite disappointed if I buy one that fails to make the grade. There were no worries with this one.

Basically, good catchy americana indie pop. Less bubblegum than previous albums, more radiohead and pixies like in tone (especially 'skyscrapers' which sounds like a funky version of the pixies 'hey'), but still sounds like OK Go. On other OK Go albums there were tracks that I deleted. Kept all of these. Overall quality higher, probably less stand out tracks. Recommend a download.
