Oeuvres complètes d'Émile Zola (French Edition) [Kindle Edition]

First I should declare my interest: French is my first language though I have lived in the UK for over 40 years, so it is a teenager's rusty French. I was taught literature and grammar at school.
Also I had previously read several of Zola's books in paperback and enjoyed them. So at low cost I tried this book of his complete works.

It is a good Kindle implementation. All the links work including the table of contents. Some photos and pictures are included and they can be zoomed into. This surprised me because I have seen some poor Kindle implementations on other more modern books.

Each major work is reviewed as an introduction. Often Zola also introduces the various works and some of his letters to friends are included. This puts each section in context. A bit of French history helps. Zola first published most of his work in various newspapers (they had the bad habit of failing as business) which explains the large number of chapters.

The book includes all of Zola's work in chronological order. His first books are ponderous and dark. Long complex sentences make the reading hard work. I skipped these early books after the first one and went to the Rougon Macquart section.

These are the books I know. A completely different, easily read style. Even made me laugh because of the wacky terms used. There is a Kindle book just on the Rougon Macquart, you might prefer this as a read without the extras.

Many of the terms used are old French and are not included in my French-English Kindle dictionary. I read too fast to stop and look up my Larousse.

Five stars for an excellent implementation of a massive set of books.

Zola's works are a mixture of the beautiful and the depressing. Some of the Kindle versions in French contained a lot of spelling mistakes and sometimes all the accents were missing. The Kindle French dictionary proved helpful as an adjunct.
