5.0 out of 5 stars I want more! 15 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yes! I read it!
It had to be a light book for a few evenings.
Unfortunately!
I read it in a few hours because with every chapter I wanted to know more and more.
More about Eve.
More about Laura.
More about mysterious mythical Oenone.
More about Jeff and his work.
Brilliantly shown trials and tribulations of ordinary people with heads full of dreams. All of this is interspersed with gray reality and the world of fantasy. Full of humor, music (even though we didn't hear it, it's there!), love, passions, emotions, suffering ....
The End came, as always with good books, too quickly. It left that silly feeling that I can't turn the next page and I can't read what will happen because I still want more and more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Romance With a Supernatural Twist 16 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Oenone by Agatha Rae is a contemporary romance with a small supernatural twist. The story focuses on best friends, Evelyn & Laura. They work together as editors in Boston. Evelyn is single and very attracted to their boss, Jeff. Laura is in a loving marriage with her wonderful husband, Bruce. Laura develops cancer and searches for a miracle and that's where the supernatural twist comes in...but the miracle really isn't a miracle.
The story was well written and well edited, although a few times it was obvious that English was not the author's primary language. The book was very detailed and gave the reader an abundance of information about the character's daily life. At times I felt that it was a little too detailed and that the excessive details slowed down the pace of the book.
The story was interesting and I liked the supernatural twist, but I didn't love all the characters, though. Evelyn came across as a petty person who cared more about her love life than anything else. And Jeff's character was ok but a little bit of a jerk. Laura & Bruce appealed to me much more than Evelyn & Jeff. I liked how they portrayed a loving married couple dealing with a huge health issue and supporting each other.
Adding in the supernatural twist added real intrigue to the story and made it more interesting. I loved how everything tied together in the end and Evelyn and Laura solved their own problems.
If you like shows like Sex In The City and contemporary romance/supernatural books, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

* Note - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gosia Zalewska 10 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I say YES a hundred times to Oenone:)- I patienly waited (it felt like ages though:)) for a paperback version while it was already released as an e-book (I'm a stubborn traditionalist:)). My patience was rewarded big time- I was really impressed- the book is excellent:) Firstly, I love the cover- it feels like the mysterious green eye hides some secrets behind and you want to discover them right away. Secondly, the book is written in such style, that it catches your attention instantly, grabs you straight at the beginning and doesn't loosen the grip till the end- I literally couldn't stop reading:). The plot is focused on the lives of two close friends: Evy and Laura, whose devotion and love to each other and family is boundless. Getting to know them while turning page after page was so easy and natural- actually it felt like I knew them already:)- music they listened to, movies they watched, books they read, intertwined with their specific and charming sense of humor- it all felt so familiar and known. I laughed out loud with them:) The idyll, however, doesn't last long- Laura's unfortunate serious sickness and Evy's love problems turn their lives upside down, test their friendship and probe their strenght and resilience. `A drowning man clutches at a straw' so do our characters, they clutch at the mysterious and enigmatic `person', who later on severly complicates their lives. Suffice to say, the girls open the Pandora's box and realize they have to do everything in their power to put things right back. Otherwise they will pay a heavy price- implications are far more disturbing they could have foreseen. Would they achieve their goal or not? And who is that mystic and miraculous, yet dangerous individual they were dealing with? Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and intriguing debut novel 23 Aug. 2013
By Robyn
Format:Paperback
Agatha Rae's debut novel "Oenone" is one of those books that gets you hooked immediately after you open it and start reading. The book is divided into two parts; one being a very well written novel of manners with good pace, very plausible characters and plots being built in intriguing way. The second half, somewhere around page 150, has an original twist - one of the main characters is looking for esoteric help from Alyssa, a healer who the reader knows is better to stay away from. The actions move much faster from that moment, but don't get me wrong; the slower pace of the first half of the book is by all means necessary to built up the tension and is not boring, it's very natural and intriguing and makes you wonder what is to happen next.

The story circles around four characters, apparently Evy and Jeff are the main ones, but, to be honest, the theoretically supportive characters of Bruce and Laura are at least as much important and the actions they take have a severe influence on everything that is happening in the book, plus they're also very much present in the book, so it's hard to call them only supportive. I think they're equally important. Evy is in love with Jeff, who's her boss, and who does not want to engage into an office romance. Those two have great chemistry and the tension between them is very visible. However, the masterpiece is the relationship between Laura and Bruce. They're a lovely, supportive, loving couple, people who have known each other for many years, who complete each other and who would do whatever it takes to save each other. Their struggle with Laura's drama, Bruce's support and unconditional love they share bring back the faith in deep, romantic love and in "for good and for worse". Wonderful people.
