I. Yes, this album stormed the charts in Turkey and "Simarik (Radio Edit)" became a Euro-hit. However, it was 13 years ago. Some people may think that its days are over. They are wrong...

II. Generally Turkish pop hits just stand for the summer season and then disappear. This album is different. It is the "magnum opus" of the Turkish pop, a way to document the Turkey of 1990s.

III. Probably one of the best albums that you can find which is in a language that you do not have a clue about.

My choices are;

"Simarik" (I admit that this is not the most original song that you can find), "Ikimizin Yerine" (one of the settled and slow songs in Tarkan's catalogue), "Ölürüm Sana" (has a great video, must see), "Salina Salina Sinsice" (catchy!), "Gecenin Ürkek Kanatlarinda" (like an independent try, rare in Turkish music), "Kir Zincirlerini" (old disco hit, still has some power).

Probably the best Turkish CD in years... 21 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Tarkan is not a new artist in Turkey, but he suddenly gained the world's attention in 1998 and 1999 with the hit single Simarik (the kiss).

Simarik is the biggest hit from this album, (it is the song where he kisses both left and right) but other singles have been or will be released (Bu gece, Olurum sana).

To describe this music as anything other than Turkish would be silly. However, it is very modern Turkish and the sound is what many trendy western dance acts would kill to create. Tarkan combines arabic rythms (very similar to latin rythms) with heavy drum machines, he uses traditional Turkish and modern western instruments together and he sings both arabic and western scales well. He also writes most of his songs himself.

The songs are in Turkish language and should be included in the little booklet (if you can understand any of it).

It is not just a dance album although the hit singles are dance numbers. Olurum sana includes a couple of strong, intense and powerful ballads which will make your heart long for Turkey in no time...

When I first heard of Tarkan I was in Paris, September 1998. I bought the album then and it soon grew to be my favorite CD. Now, one year later, it still is!

hwj, NZ 1999.

TARKAN is Da Bomb! 17 Dec 1999
By Brooke - Published on Amazon.com

This past summer I spent two fun-filled months is beautiful Istanbul, Turkey. I'm not Turkish, but I loved everything about the country. Then While I was watching a turkish version of MTV a video came on that at first made me roll with laughter. The way Tarkan danced was at first something I found quite amusing. As listened more I was hooked. I still found him funny, but I had to have the cd before I left Turkey. So I bought Olurum Sana. I took it home and played it for everyone. At first everyone laughed, but then soon after they too got hooked. His music is catchy and different and even though a lot of us can't understand a word of it, it still is amazing music. I'm starting a Tarkan Crew at my school and I'm sure he's going to catch on. I also saw him on an interview in which he said he was going to record an english album.

Definitely worth a UK release - but don't translate it! 8 Oct 1999
By "keithtempleman" - Published on Amazon.com

My partner Jane and I first heard this album on a gulet holiday in July 99, where it was played most evenings - so by the end we could sing most of the songs without the album. We were tempted to buy it there but resisted, only to hear Simarik on London Capital Radio a few weeks later (albeit transmitted over a mobile phone - it's a long story). I then ordered it from Amazon.

We were hooked by this album's blend of Turkish rhythm, phrasing and orchestration with a very western pop production style. Fortunately, Tarkan does not suffer from the Eurovision overacting syndrome but has a powerful and expressive voice.

I am sure this disc could break into UK mainstream but they would probably have to do an English version - a shame. Try it for yourself.
