Product Description

Product Description

Odyssey is the follow up album to Westenra's debut, Pure. Although the bias of repertoire on this album is classical, Westenra also showcases her extraordinary talent for songwriting with the beautiful track, "What You Never Know (Won't Hurt You)". This album features beautiful versions of "Wiegenlied" (Mozart), Caccini's "Ave Maria", "May it Be" (as featured in Lord of the Rings) and "Quanta Qualia" (a melodic choral piece). Oddyssey also includes Westenra's version of Joni Mitchell’s "Both Sides Now", a beautiful ballad called "Never Saw Blue (Like That)" and "Dell' Amore Non Si Sa"--a sensational duet with Andrea Bocelli.

I didn't like Hayley's previous album, Pure, very much, mostly because I found the accompaniment weak and lifeless. I bought Odyssey for someone else but decided to play it first out of curiosity. Everyone I've ever spoken with who's met Hayley or worked with her has spoken positively about what a nice person she is, and how professional she is, and that made me want to see what the album is like.

I was amazed from the word go. Hayley's voice has developed in both tone and expression, and the accompanying music on this album is played with feeing and dynamic richness. I liked it immediately, but I couldn't really keep playing someone else's CD, so I ordered another copy for myself. Naturally I'd recommend this album to anyone.

something new 15 Dec 2005
Format:Audio CD
Like a lot of people I very much enjoyed her first album pure, and was pleasently surprised with the difference in this album. Hayley has matured not only vocally, in age, but as an artist too and I feel this album has stretched her more and shows her trying to develop her own unique style - which in this current climate of crossover is very refreshing. Hayley doesn't try to immitate or be something she is not, she sings straight from the heart, and I feel she is best putting her mark on new songs rather than covering opera classics as her voice doesn't have the right texture for that as yet. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes to listen to well sung, produced emotive music and would urge listeners not always to expect the same. Well done young lady.

Hayley has grown up. Take a look at the cover: The pretty young girl from Christchurch, New Zealand, has become a beautiful young lady. But along with her visual charms, Hayley's voice has matured as well.

The album opens with its indisputable highlight, the cover version of Secret Garden's "Prayer". The song's ethereal beauty is so soothing and embracing, you wish for it never to end.

With "What You Never Know (Won't Hurt You)", but especially with the traditional "She Moved Through the Fair" Hayley then demonstrates once again why she is known as the "singing sensation". Every single note is hit with impressive precision while her voice at all times remains warm and soft.

With "Odyssey" Enya's "May It Be" as performed by Miss Westenra has now also become available as a studio version. As it was with Hayley's live performance on the DVD, I caught myself listening open-mouthed, being stunned by the pure splendor of her beautiful voice.

The remaining tracks on this album are similarly stimulating, among others a well-arranged duet with Andrea Bocelli.

I couldn't wait for the European version, so I ordered my copy directly in New Zealand. But whether you decide to do as I did or to wait for the official U.K. release, by all means do no not miss out on this new masterpiece by Hayley Westenra. You will not regret having embarked on this journey, this "Odyssey", into sheer sonic delight.
