"Not Vance Moore again" was the general reaction to Odyssey and, though this might be a little harsh, it does sum up the style of the book.
Moore's previous Magic novel, Prophecy, was really quite bad and Odyssey suffers from similar problems. Descriptive passages are erratic, irrelevant things are often related in detail while important events are rushed through quickly.
The plot of the book is also covered quite badly, at over half way through I still had little idea what the point of the entire thing was. The motivation of the characters seems non-existent at points and only random events keep things moving.
However, that said, this is not a awful book. It has a few good characters and it is not the plot-free-zone that Prophecy seemed. It is hard to know whether the slightly flat feel to Odyssey's plot is the fault of Vance Moore or the Wizards continuity department but, either way, this is simply not the best of the Magic novels. Read it if you want to know the plot behind the Odyessy expansion but don't expect wonders and don't let it put you off the other Magic novels.
