A new Scottish Talent,

I enjoyed Peter Burnett's first novel "The Machine Doctor" and looked forward to reading his recently published second novel "Odium" Second novels are notoriously difficult to write but in "Odium" Peter Burnett has succeeded in raising his considerable writing talent to a new height. This is a gifted young writer who promises to become aa major voice not only in Scotland but in the whole English speaking world. This is not an easy novel. It is intelligent, well written and thought provoking. It appears much in the tradition of the European novel of ideas, philosophy, politics, and satire. Rare and intriguing insights into the contemporary world abound. Yet it succeeds admirably to hold the attention throughout by its cleverly devised plot, skilfully weaving the narrative between the main character, Rubio's humdrum life in a Paris suburb as a doctor and the adventures which assail him when he retreats to Egypt for a holiday. This is a book with a message which cannot be ignored but is also an enjoyable book. I look forward to Peter Burnett's next novel with anticipation
