"An incredible story, beautifully written"
"A superb follow-up to William's Story"

A young girl grows up in France at the turn of the twentieth century, in a time when life was simpler; sometimes harsh, but full of love and optimism for the future.

In 1912 a chance meeting with a British boy, William Collins, offers her the exciting prospect of a new adventure, and the thrill of a first love. But their dreams are shattered with the advent of the Great War. Around her, the world turns to hate, and a brutality she must endure if she is to survive. This is the story of Odile Lefebvre and her private battle to survive the horrors of the war on the Western Front.

She is forced, at the point of a bayonet, to descend into a world filled with horror and desperation. Her love for William, his fate unknown to her, her duty and love for her parents, drives her onward in a desperate struggle to survive.

A chance to escape the war is offered to her, hope for her family to survive, a temptation willingly given. She must choose to gamble their lives against her love for William and his enduring love for her.

No girl should have to make this choice.

A beautifully crafted tale of the hardships that want to be lovers faced during an horrific period in our history. A wonderful story of pain, heart ache but ultimately determination and the belief that if you have love you have everything you need.

Following from Williams story, Odile's own fight is as equally courageous, dangerous and believable, it is easy to imagine yourself in that place, torn between saving yourself and your family and that insatiable feeling when you experience true love.

The skilful writing also brings a lot of familiarity to the story, recognising scenes from Williams story throughout makes you as the reader feel like you were there and gives you a true understanding of the magnitude of the events that happened.

I look forward to the film as such a beautiful story should be on the big screen.

In short...totally recommend you read it, especially after reading William's Story by the same author.

In more detail...

This book is part two in the trilogy of The Mad Game - a series following the lives of two people caught up in the maelstrom of the First World War and beyond.
The first book, William's Story, has tracked the life of William Collins - an English boy who has met and fallen in love with the French girl Odile, just before the outbreak of WWI. We have followed the boy through the blood and mud of the Western Front to emerge a changed man...clinging onto his humanity through his love for Odile....

This second book, Odile's Story, now reveals the French girl's tale, running in parallel and interwining like the threads of fate through William's own.

Odile begins her story at 16 years old, a year into the Great War. Already she has been moved on by the tide of war from her home village of Bazentin in Northern France. We now experience the European stage from another perspective..not that of the bloodied soldier but of a native of this once beautiful but now scarred and ravaged land.
Two opposing waves of male humanity, English and German, are clashing up against each other right through her life, threatening to overwhelm her.
Hers is a tale of female survival and of the choices one has to make to survive..the compromises, the justifications and the battlelines drawn inside one's own head...and which of those lines to cross....

Just like William, Odile has to fight battles of her own, but these are not the fights of cold steel and spurting blood, they use different weapons - blouse buttons and a warm smile....how much to give and how much to save.....

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved Odile's War 25 Oct 2014

I loved reading this book it has every emotion going included in the content and as the reader you feel all of them too! Well I did!!

I love books that are written based on true stories as this one is. Having read The Mad Game and thinking that William's war was dreadful, based on my families loss during WW1, I think Odile's in some way was far harder. What a very difficult and hard time for a young girl to grow into woman hood...I am so looking forward now to the 3rd book. Thanks Chris Cherry for this amazingly well written book! Mo x

I read William's story and found the content enlightening and absorbing. Wasn't sure what to expect from Odile's War but it really is a good read and provides an insight to the life of French civilians caught up in the conflict as forced labour. In fact I'm of the opinion that I found this novel even more enlightening as few people, including myself, know anything of the French civilians working and living as part of the German war machine.

Looking forward to No 3 in The Mad Game Series !
