Product Description

Synopsis

This first volume about the history of Odeon cinemas in Britain traces its creation in the 1930s and its evolution to the modern house style of key architects. It looks at the Odeon take over of other cinemas, the Odeon circuit release and the impact of World War II. This book is also a tribute to the architecture of the Odeon cinemas which were built in Britain in the 1930s. There are photographs of interior and exterior architecture of almost all the new Odeon cinemas. The book draws on unpublished material including notes of Deutsch's associates and company. records. The second volume will cover the years after Deutsch's death in 1941 when J.Arthur Rank took control, to the present day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation!!!, 21 Feb 2002
This review is from: Odeon Cinemas: Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation: 1 (Paperback)
This book is to my knowledge the first in depth guide to the history of the ODEON cinema chain, from it's early days up till 1941.Detailing the architects who designed the Cinemas and also the histories of all the cinemas in the chain.

Illustrated throughout with period photographs of the interior and exterior of the majority of the Cinemas in the chain. If you are interested in Cinema history, or even art deco architecture buy this book. You wont be dissapointed, it's an excellent read.

Looking forward to Vol 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best history of Odeon you can get, 20 Aug 2010

I have previously commented on Volume 2 of this History of Odeon Cinemas. Everything I wrote then applies to this Volume 1. Allen Eyles writes concisely and in an easy to read fashion, with a level of expertise and detail on the subject that I haven't seen elsewhere. This book falls into the "must have" category for those that love British Cinema architecture. Generous illustrations, plenty of reading, and a book that comes off the shelf again and again. Without a shadow of hesitation - buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative and evocative, 23 Oct 2010

This review is from: Odeon Cinemas: Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation: 1 (Paperback)
Whilst I've always enjoyed going to see films at the cinema, I'd never previously paid much attention to the actual cinema buildings and their architecture. It was spotting during a recent visit to my parents that one of my boyhood haunts, the Doncaster Odeon (nee. Gaumont) had been demolished which sparked my interest and prompted me to buy this book.

As a newcomer to the subject, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I have been very pleasantly surprised by this book. The quality of the writing is excellent; as are the photographs and the overall structure/content has been very well thought-out.

The book tells the story of the Odeon empire chronologically, listing all the cinemas that Odeon built themselves and any existing cinemas they acquired from other chains year-by-year. A great strength of the book is that it draws heavily on official publicity pictures commissioned by Odeon at the time of each cinema's opening; they arranged for a professional photographer to take interior and exterior pictures of each one just prior to its formal launch and these images give a real period feel to the book. As far as is practically possible, each picture is located alongside the corresponding text, so that as you read about (say) the interior decoration of the Odeon Peterborough or the exterior styling of the Odeon York, the images are there for you to refer to.

This chronological telling of the story gives a good narrative to what could otherwise be quite a `dry' listing of buildings and places. At the end of the book each location is summarised by year with an update of its current status and this is the only sad aspect, as so many of these magnificent cinemas are alas no longer standing or in operation!

I can recommend this book without hesitation and am intending to subsequently purchase volume two!
