4.0 out of 5 stars A really good film 16 Dec 2013
By PJ Rankine TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
I have not read any of the 'Odd Thomas' books by Dean R Koonz so came to this film with no preconceptions. Odd Thomas is a young man who can see the dead and they come to him with their problems. Not only can he see the dead though he can also see demonic creatures he calls Bodachs who gather when a violent death is about to occur. When they start to gather in the largest numbers he has ever seen he realises that a major traumatic event is about to hit his town and does all he can do to stop it.
Anton Yelchin plays Odd with a knowing naiveté that is completely believable and Addison Timlin plays his long suffering but loving girlfriend. Addison is girl next door gorgeous and whether Koonz pictured her looking this good in his writing I don't know but she is a real pleasure to watch. The film also features a welcome performance by Willem Dafoe as the chief of police who believes and supports Odd contrary to the usual storyline.
Overall this is a very watchable film with good production qualities and believable performances. Some of the scenes could be frightening for younger viewers and the ending may make you cry but its is definitely worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining 4 Feb 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
As a fan of the books I had high hopes for this, especially after seeing the trailer. It's such a shame it never got a cinema release because of financial problems concerning the production as - flaws aside - this is a fairly good adaptation of Koontz's novel concerning a young man who can see dead people. These spirits can't talk but they can still indirectly lead him to stop future tragedies - sort of if the kid from sixth sense grew up to be a reluctant action hero, tackling serial killers and gunmen.

Sommer's film is, perhaps predictably, a bit over-edited and plot-heavy (it would have benefitted from more quite moments between Odd and Stormy) but it is surprising how faithful the film is to the book, particularly in regard to the ending (which I will not spoil). Yelchin and Timlin are perfectly cast as Odd and Stormy and this is bar far the film's strong point. Hopefully a Blu-ray release is imminent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Well Done 5 Mar 2014
Format:DVD
I have read every single Odd Thomas novel (not the graphic ones) and I will admit to having huge reservations about the filming of the first novel. The opening line of the book is the one of very few novels that I have read over the years that has stuck with me, and it goes "My name is Odd Thomas and I see dead people. The difference is I do something about it" (or words to that effect).

The film picks up on Odd's very humble attitude towards his gift and his compulsion to do something about justice for the dead no matter the cost very well. His little mannerisms, his ticks and turns of phrase as described in the book are very well portrayed by the young man playing him.

Willem Dafoe is one of my favourite character actors and having watched him play some very nasty people, it was great to see him play Sheriff Porter so close to the narrative.

The special effects team deserve an award as they have visuallted the bodachs pretty much as well as I had imagined them.

I knew the storyline and how it went and it still made me jump and by the end of it, even knowing the ending, i was in tears!

Just my humble opinion but I can't help wishing they'd make more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining 29 Jun 2014
Format:DVD
He may play a baddie really well but I really liked seeing Willem Defoe as a goody for a change. He's not how I imagined the sherif to be when I read the book and the relationship between Odd and the sherif wasn't built up as strongly as in the book but the story was so closely linked to the book that I didn't feel cheated by this depiction. The story and ending was no surprise to me because I've read the Dean Koontz series of books about Odd Thomas but it didn't take away any enjoyment from watching the film. The special effects are good and the characters are likeable and it is definitely worth a watch if you enjoy the lighter horror/supernatural story without massive gallons go guts and gore but don't want the saccharine sweet rubbish of some popular teeny flicks like Twilight.

4.0 out of 5 stars At last a Koontz movie that delivers 17 Jun 2014
Format:Blu-ray
If you have read the Odd Thomas books you will know the premise of Odd, s talent and have the knowledge of what is going on.
What you need to know is, is this any good based on previous adaptation disappointments?
The answer to that is....yes!!!!
It really captures not only the essence of the books, but also Koontz, s humour.
The effects are really good and yes the film bounds along at a good pace, with really good affects to boot.
As with nearly all adaptations there are compromises, but in general this is a really faithful adaptation of the much loved novels.
Up until this release I would say the best Koontz movies have been-The Face of Fear, Servants of Twilight, Mr.Murder and possibly Soul Survivor, and to a lesser degree Phantoms.Dark River wasnt to bad either.
So Odd Thomas is a step in the right direction and well worth a peak.
