Sadie is bemused when her husband-to-be is washed up on the Irish seashore, falling in love with her and taking her back to London. But Joseph, a doctor, begins to realize just how quaint Sadie is and he questions whether she will fit in with London life and his conservative mother.

This novel has the quirkiness of Anne Tyler with the wit of Edna O'Brien. It is a beautiful book, chronicling the precarious relationship of a wild and passionate Irish woman and her more anally retentive husband. Francis writes with a fierce and funny intelligence and creates a character who can make you laugh and cry within the same sentence. This is a terrific debut novel, and I can't wait for her next.

This first outing by Sarah Francis is full of the promise of greater things to come. Her protagonists are quirky in their actions and acceptance of other's actions in ways that seem entirely believable. Odd fish and Englishmen is an original tale imbued with the character and ambience of Ireland trying to find its space in the contrasting life of England. Highly recommended read.
