4.0 out of 5 stars ABOVE AND BELOW WATER THERE IS NO ESCAPE, 23 Jul 2007

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
After a botched mission makes them look like real morons, Police Officers Walter (Frederic Lehne) and his partner Nick (Michael Reilly Burke) are demoted from River Patrol by their captain, (Paul Vincent O'Connor) which they are none to happy about. An unexplained shipping accident in the middle of New York Harbor piques their interest, and against their orders, they start an investigation. They come to believe that an octopus has become a resident of the harbor and report it to the captain, who doesn't believe the story. Checking out another wreck by themselves, Walter is attacked and killed by the octopus they believe is there, yet no one still believes the story. The Mayor's (Duncan Fraser) top aide, Rachel, (Meredith Morton) does believe, and coming together to honor Walter at his funeral, team up to track down and stop the octopus before it ruins the upcoming Fourth of July celebration being held in the harbor.

The Good News: For a small budget film, this is far better than it has every right to be. For one, it has a fast moving plot that introduces the antagonist early and keeps it in the center of the action until the end. Also, the octopus does act like a monster in this type of film: it constantly menaces the heroes who are looking for, it attacks people vigorously, and it shows up at the end when it should've been killed earlier. Don't call that a spoiler: it's in just about every single one of these movies, and after seeing tow or three of them, the real twist should be that the creature dies the first time. This is more of a situational scare film: it's not a "Boo!" kind of scare; it's just that in the situations in the film, you would be scared. It is really refreshing to see this kind of film, which is similar to "House of Wax" in that it's not really a jump scare; you'd just be scared to be in that situation with the characters. Here, I'm also really surprised to see one of the heroes to be killed off so early. He gets the ax about forty minutes into the movie, so the last half is really the partner's show as he tracks down the octopus by himself, until he's joined by the mayor's aide. The death scene is really the main highlight, as it is beautifully filmed underwater while they are searching for the remains for a wreck that happened earlier. The way it is filmed, with all the elements used, is a major accomplishment that sends shivers down your back is heartwarming as well. I really can't describe the scene; see it for yourself. The ending is also fast-paced, once you overlook the fact that it comes back when by all logic it should've died, is well-executed, and the death of the beast is full of action.

The Bad News: As others here have said, this is a pure by-the-numbers kind of film, so most of you have already seen this movie before from other films. The only things that change are the location, the enemy monster, and how it dies. Everything else has all been played out before: the unconvinced mayor, the disbelieving police chief, the death of someone close to the hero that sends him into overdrive to kill the monster, the false death of the monster, and the action-packed, pyrotechnic-laden finale. It all depends on how you feel about watching this kind of movie, as just about every killer sea creature film since "Jaws" has used the same basic plot details. Try something new and different next time: a killer octopus loose in New York Harbor screams potential. Personally, I would love to see a scene where the octopus scales Yankee Stadium to catch a Home Run away from a player. How about it? No disrespect to the New York Yankee fans reading this. I still think it look cool seeing that on screen.

The Final Verdict: With a fill-in-the-blanks plot and no originality when it seemed bright with potential, this is a mixed film. It might too amateurish for the hardcore sea creature fan, while it's "been there, seen that" image might irritate those that don't really care or not. Watch with caution, as it does seem to be a split too close for me to call.
