Everyone in our household loves the Octonauts - our Sky + box contains almost all of the 52 episodes (along with a fair few Creature Reports), so until we can free up the hard disc when the DVDs come out (as surely they will soon??) we were all delighted to see new books released, especially as they relate to two of our daughter's favourite episodes.

The book is colourful and introduces the crew at the start, before going into the story which contains illustrations and text from the episode. There is also a "Captain's Log" at the end of the book which gives information on the whale shark and useful facts about the creatures and Octonauts are printed in the corner throughout the book.

Like the episodes, the books bring the morals of friendship, helping one other and sharing across in an excellent way with lovable characters (Tunip the Vegimal is a big favourite in our house) who interact brilliantly with each other.

My only gripe is the "as seen on TV" badge embossed on the cover as I feel it cheapens it slightly. Everyone with pre-school children knows the Octonauts are on TV as, at the moment, that is pretty much the only place they are until the toys and other merchandise are released in mid July this year.

I would thoroughly recommend these books and hope that more based on the episodes will be published in the near future (personally I'm hoping for The Marine Iguanas and the Snot Sea Cucumber!)

Read and enjoy again and again!

I was extremely excited to order the official tie in series for my daughter's birthday, our entire lives revolve around Octonaut characters! (Today I'm Mummy Kwazi btw lol)
I have to admit I was a little disappointed by this book though.
I was initially distrustful of the Meomi books, but found them to be whimsical, original, beautifully illustrated and so full of incidental illustrative detail that we can almost make our own stories up from them!
These are an entirely different style, which is fine and suits the TV series, but I found in this story that the pictures chosen didn't always clearly represent the story given in the text, which my daughter didn't notice and I found a little irritating.
I found the illustrations too cluttered for my taste too, they could perhaps do with pages being a little larger and improving the text/image layout.
You would really gain the benefit of the great little 'sea creature factlet' boxes they've placed in the text.
It's probably worth noting too that the text is exciting, quite exilarating, and I find I can't read it at bedtime as my little person gets too excited!

So, all in all, it is a good book, with a great story, but a few layout issues that will hopefully be resolved as more books are issued.

100% agree, the show is amazing and the books capture the feeling of the programme so well! My little one loves them almost as much as the TV already. I'm waiting for the baby dolfin episode...

Swallowed by a Whale Shark!
This is a fabulous book to read to preschoolers and key stage 1 children. Very competent under 8s might be able to read it unaided if they are used to the names in the series. Read more
