This young adult book read as an unusual mix of horror and comedy. Crystal Aldridge, the main character was meant to be learning how to become a witch and take over from her mother as guardian of the orifice, but she really couldn't be bothered. She came across to me as a pretty dull and shallow character who I couldn't find any love for. Bone, on the other hand, was a real character. Full of fun and with a great personality. Some of the one-liners she came out with and stunts she pulled had me laughing out loud.

Spells going mightily wrong, slimy holes appearing in walls, creatures of the underworld and unborn film stars made this a funny and extremely quirky read. Every so often though things seems to go off at a tangent, which left me wondering what 'that' was all about.

I can't decide whether L.C. Glazebrook's style of writing took me a while to get used to, or if the writing actually improved as I came into the second half of the story, and once I had finished the book I realised I was quite looking forward to reading more about Bone and Crystal.

Crystal is an eighteen-year-old witch, in training by her mother to keep the nasty things lurking in interdimensional portals contained. Bone is her best friend, who died 2 years before and insists on hanging around. Halloween is coming up, and there's a film maker in town with a stock pile of movies that are having a strange effect on the locals.

There's a lot to like about 'October Girls'. I thought the characters were brilliant and Nicholson's writing style keeps things fresh and entertaining. The plot was interesting too. There was an abundance of odd names - Crystal's boyfriend is called Pettigrew, the film maker's name is Dempsey - which I personally found mildly irritating, but there is actually a bit later on in the book that sort of pokes fun at this. I like books to have a good sense of humour, and a sense of fun, and this has both.

The only thing that really felt a little odd about this book was at times it read like something aimed at say thirteen-year-olds, while at other times it seemed more directed at older teens. This didn't effect my overall enjoyment and was only noticeable a couple of times. All in all I'd say this was a really entertaining, quirky & fun read. If you're into YA Fantasy I'd say give it a go, it's something a bit different.

I found the story enjoyable, the characters easy to fall in love with, especially Bone and Crystal and Momma is absolutely hilarious. Once I read the first page it had me gripped. Throughout the story Scott Nicholson never gives up on that banter and corpse/death humor between the girls. Fantastic storytelling and cant wait to read his other Novels!

Wasn't enthralled by this. It didn't really hold my attention, I was a bit bored throughout to be honest! But it's not bad, just not my taste.
