Format: Audio CD
This is an excellent reissue of two terrific discs by the Hilliard Ensemble from the late 1980s. Ockeghem was a singer and composer in Paris, Tours and other places in the late 15th Century and was arguably Europe's pre-eminent composer of the time. This set includes his magnificent Requiem, two other very fine mass settings and some of his best motets. Ockeghem's compositions don't have the immense, complex harmonic structures of, for example, Palestrina's a century later but they have a simpler beauty which I find spellbinding. To risk a possibly clumsy analogy, they have the feel to me of a beautifully proportioned stone church rather than a richly ornamented cathedral - different, but equally beautiful and moving.

The Hilliard Ensemble are perfectly suited to this repertoire. Their slightly spare, haunting sound brings out the music's beauty and depth and David James's plangent countertenor in particular makes it glow. The Clerk's group have also made a series of magnificent recordings of Ockeghem which I own and treasure; this is different in feel but just as good and I love both equally. The recorded sound is excellent and I find the whole thing immensely rewarding.

Certainly if you're looking for somewhere to start with Ockeghem you can't go wrong here and if, like me, you're already a seasoned Ockeghem listener this will make an excellent addition to your collection. Very warmly recommended.

I have a number of versions of these works, and the Hilliard Ensemble is my favourite by some way - highly recommended. However, I would say that the download version of this is blighted by pops and crackles that make it sound as if it was taken from a used LP rather than from a tape master. Not the case, I'm sure, but I would be warned when considering buying the MP3 version. Amazon has blamed it on a 'bad download' which seems unlikely, but kindly refunded my £6.99, suggesting I re-downloaded. However, having listened to the samples available here at amazon I hear that the crackles are on those versions too. I intend to inform amazon of this and will amend this review to reflect the response I get from them.

Moving out laterally from my dabbling in Josquin Desprez brings me inevitably to Johannes Ockeghem, one of his widely admired predecessors; indeed Josquin himself, among others, wrote a lament on the death of Ockeghem. The Hilliard Ensemble have never disappointed, so this budget two disc reissue in the Virgin Veritas series seemed a no-brainer.

Kicking off with the requiem mass "Missa Pro Defunctis" (incidentally the oldest surviving polyphonic requiem) means a subdued start which is only to be expected, only really picking up in complexity with the Offertory. But for me, the Offertory is about as good as it gets. Even with the rest of the programme, the "Missa Mi-Mi", "Missa Prolationum" and five sizeable motets, it is all a little tired and dreary.

This being my first experience of Ockeghem, I feel a little loathe to blame it on the music itself of a composer who was held with such high regard. Could it be that the Hilliard Ensemble have actually failed to excel here for once? Undoubtedly I will continue to explore Ockeghem once again in the future, but I feel that fans of Josquin and other renaissance polyphony as well as Hilliard enthusiasts may feel underwhelmed by this disc as did I.

As with all these Virgin Veritas reissues, the sleeve notes are brief and contains no lyrics.

EDIT: For a very good recording of the requiem, see Ensemble Organum: Ockeghem - Requiem.

EDIT2: For a truly superb disc featuring the requiem, see The Clerk's Group: Ockeghem - Requiem; Missa Fors Seulement

Sublime a capella sound 24 Dec. 2011

The Hillard Ensemble produces the high quality sound we have come to expect and this recording is no exception. The interpretation appears true to its period with a fascinating timbre to the counter tenor's voice. An essential addition to anyone interested in music of this period.
It always adds to the pleasure when the recording is delivered way before it was expected in pristine conditon!
