If the idea of using traditional English folk songs as starting point for long, meditative, almost raga-like, compositions, using middle eastern and western instruments, intigues you, then I strongly recommend this album. It unfolds like a flower, beautiful and complex, not seeking resolution but rather just drifting downstream. At times almost Coltrane-esque in its trance-like searching and its eastern sound, 'Ochre' combines the free and improvisatory dynamics of a jazz group, with the awareness not only of folk roots but how good tunes can travel, be reworked, and find new life anywhere in the world.
This is one CD I can't stop playing and my one quibble is that although 'Ochre' is just shy of an hour long, it just ain't enough!
