* "A thoroughly engaging album of modern love songs with a variety of beats" according to Billboard, "O'chi" not only reflects the soulful styling of other early PWL tracks for Princess, Haywoode and the Three Degrees, but also marked SAW's first foray into the garage-house/pop crossover sound of subsequent productions for Mel & Kim and others.
* Digitally re-mastered direct from the original master tapes, this Deluxe Edition brings together the original album with no less than nineteen bonus tracks across two CDs, most of them previously available only on vinyl or entirely unreleased. A comprehensive collection of sought-after full-length 12" mixes from Phil Harding, Adonis, Dave Ogrin, Tony Prendatt & Matthew Kasha and others features together with the B-sides `I Play Games' and `I Just Want To Be Loved' and the US-only alternative album versions of `100% Pure Pain' and `Two Hearts Beating As One'.
* The extensive booklet also features additional photos, an illustrated discography, full lyrics and new sleeve notes from PWL expert Tom Parker together with O'chi's exclusive personal commentary and contributions.
Tottenham-born O'chi Brown was discovered by a Trojan Records producer at the age of 17. She made her name in the early 80s with a string of Lovers Rock covers, ranging from Bob Marley to "Auld Lang Syne", "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Unchained Melody". In 1985, the single `Why Can't We Be Friends?' marked a move towards a more upbeat pop sound and secured O'chi a deal with Magnet Records for an album to be recorded at Pete Waterman's newly-established PWL Studios. "O'chi" was followed in 1987 by a second Magnet LP, "Light The Night", O'chi's last album to date.
Original CD copies of "O'chi" are amongst the most sought-after of all PWL-related releases and often change hands for three-figure sums. Now the album becomes the latest in a long line of Hit Factory classics to be reissued on Cherry Pop.

Wonderful album from the golden era of SAW,
This review is from: O'chi Deluxe Edition (Audio CD)
Cherry Pop on the ball again, with another stunning re-release of a sought-after gem from the 80s.O'chi's only album with SAW is probably best known for the original version of 'Whenever You Need Somebody', which would later be a big hit for Rick Astley. The thing about SAW is, now the dust has settled and the late 80s/early 90s hate for them has almost been forgotten, is that they're most known for being bubblegum pop producers - a reputation that comes from the second half of their catalogue, the late 80s and very early 90s. The catalogue of SAW can basically be put into two categories - pre and post Rick Astley and Kylie. Rick was their first real big in-house star. Hits with Dead Or Alive and Bananarama were had previous to this time, but both groups existed before their work with SAW. With Rick Astley, and then shortly after with Kylie, SAW really refined their sound, honing it down into a focused laser of pure pop. Whilst a lot of fans look back on the 88-90 period as their best, I petition that if these fans take off their rose-tinted teenage national health specs and take a look at the 1984-87, they'll find that the first half of SAW's production catalogue is more varied, more daring and all-together far more exciting. From the pure Hi-NRG of Hazell Dean and Divine, and the unique, frenetic post-punk Synth-NRG of Dead Or Alive - to the Jam & Lewis-influenced synth-Soul of Princess, Brilliant, early Rick Astley and O'Chi Brown, and then even further afield into House and Garage with Mel & Kim etc. So O'Chi's album is a great piece of that part of SAW's production work before it was squeezed of all it's life and energy in an attempt to capture the Jason Donovan loving spotty schoolgirl market. If you like Princess, The Three Degrees, Rick Astley, Brilliant, Mel & Kim etc - basically the Jam & Lewis/American-influenced side of SAW's work - you should not hesitate in grabbing this, right now!

O'CHI BROWN,
By
This review is from: O'chi Deluxe Edition (Audio CD)
Enfin !

BRILLIANT SOULFUL SAW,
By Spaceball (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: O'chi Deluxe Edition (Audio CD)
This brilliant 1986 album by O'chi Brown was originally released in 1986, and was produced by the legendary Stock Aitken Waterman and PWL team. Released the same year as Princess, another SAW act, this album is much in the same style, and is the more soulful pop sound SAW did so well. It's also a much more credible sound for them, as opposed to the more pure pop sound they are most famous for.So finally in 2011, Cherry Pop have released this album as a 2 disc set, including all the 12" mixes, AND some never before released mixes from the PWL vaults. The main highlights are obviously the original album, which includes 4 songs written by SAW (100% Pure Pain, Caught You In A Lie, Whenever You Need Somebody and Learning To Live Without Your Love) but it's the remixes that make this extra special. A never before released 12" mix of Learning To Live Without Your Love (duet with Rick Astley) is just a masterpiece, the New York Mix of Two Hearts Beating As One is just as good, and the original US album version (over 6 minutes long) and Garage Mix of "100% Pure Pain" are also highlights for me. If you love SAW's work with Princess, The Three Degrees, Haywoode and Mel & Kim, you will love this album if you've not already heard it. Grab a copy now, you won't be disappointed!
