The original 1960 classic featuring all the major faces from Frank Sinatra's legendary 'Rat Pack'. The place is Las Vegas and suave gambling man Danny Ocean (Sinatra) has come up with a plan for one of the biggest heists in the town's history. To pull it off, he gathers together a bunch of his old wartime buddies, and amidst the chink of martini glasses and rustle of well-tailored suits, the gang prepare for the big night. However when the zero hour arrives, the boys find themselves facing a few unexpected problems, and suddenly Danny's sure-fire proposition doesn't look so certain after all.
Leave it to the Chairman of the Board to rope in a great director for the first Rat Pack movie, Ocean's Eleven
. Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front
) did indeed direct this 1960 caper movie starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop; but the results now seem like more of a historical artefact than a good piece of entertainment. The tone of the film is curiously serious--much more so than Steven Soderbergh's fluffy 2002 remake--one somehow expected that the Rat Pack would have made a more buoyant first picture. But it is something to see these guys together, if only for reasons of nostalgia.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
