Book Description

14 Oct 2010
Beneath the waves lies a hidden microcosm of life: the world of plankton. These astonishing microscopic algae and the tiny animals that eat them float freely in the sunlit surface of the sea, where they underpin the whole marine food chain, provide the world with oxygen, and play an essential role in the global carbon cycle. Richard Kirby's superb high-magnification photographs and informative text bring out the beauty and the amazing variety of forms in the plankton, and explain how global climate change and rising sea temperatures are affecting this complex world with ramifications for the ecology of our entire planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ocean Drifters - best buy of the year 4 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Beyond the cover of this book lies a whole new world - just like the one it describes beneath the sea's surface. Never has the subject of plankton been presented in such a fascinating way. The photographs of the microscopic life forms are simply extraordinary - they are beyond sci-fi. And it is not just a coffee table publication because it is packed with information. The book works on many levels and proves that small is beautiful. Dr Kirby has successfully brought his research to the masses. I sincerely hope he is working on Ocean Drifters II, the sequel.

This excellent book deals with 2 main types of plankton a)phytoplankton-plant like cells and zoopkankton-the mainly tiny animals that eat the phytoplankton. These creatures live on the surface of oceans and are the start of the food chain that keeps the world alive and undertake an essential in the global carbon cycle.
The mainly microscopic pictures -up to 300x magnification are first class.
A remarkable book rhat is highly reccommended to anyone interested in sealife.
