Format: Paperback
Beyond the cover of this book lies a whole new world - just like the one it describes beneath the sea's surface. Never has the subject of plankton been presented in such a fascinating way. The photographs of the microscopic life forms are simply extraordinary - they are beyond sci-fi. And it is not just a coffee table publication because it is packed with information. The book works on many levels and proves that small is beautiful. Dr Kirby has successfully brought his research to the masses. I sincerely hope he is working on Ocean Drifters II, the sequel.

If you are into marine biology, it's a beautiful book, but doesn't contain much scientific substance. If underwater marine photography is your bag, then you will enjoy it.

This excellent book deals with 2 main types of plankton a)phytoplankton-plant like cells and zoopkankton-the mainly tiny animals that eat the phytoplankton. These creatures live on the surface of oceans and are the start of the food chain that keeps the world alive and undertake an essential in the global carbon cycle.
The mainly microscopic pictures -up to 300x magnification are first class.
A remarkable book rhat is highly reccommended to anyone interested in sealife.

This book is beautifully printed with stunning images of the main plankton groups, and the central theme is one of how the planet and mankind could not survive in our present form and lifestyle without the presence and influence of plankton. Richard Kirby provides an articulate and succinct overview of all aspects of the planktonic world and is scholarly and detailed - totally educational and recommended.

Beautiful Photographs! 29 Aug. 2012
By Charlotte Lenox - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
While reading this book, I was impressed with the high-quality photographs. They are very clear and detailed, and well-featured in a book that focuses on imagery--they fill the whole page they occupy. The book itself covers, although broadly, many of the known groupings of plankton: bacteria/viruses, phytoplankton, zooplankton (including holoplankton and meroplankton), and the larger planktonic animals. A few species are represented in each grouping. Personally, I would have loved to see MORE species in each grouping, given the bewildering variety of plankton, but I was very pleased with what was included in this book!

Two essays are included: the first introduces the plankton and their place in ecology, and the second introduces how plankton are gathered and studied through history to the present. Both are informative and intriguing, making them excellent inclusions in a dominantly-photographic book.

The only con I have for this book is that it left me wanting more. Overall, a very high quality, enjoyable, fascinating production. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in microscopic life.

Amazing book! 24 Dec. 2011
By E. Sargent - Published on Amazon.com

I am currently pursuing my PhD in phytoplankton ecology, and purchased this book as a gift for a family member, but quickly purchased an additional copy for myself after seeing it. The text is explicative, but short and concise, and the images are simply amazing. I highly recommend this book for coffee tables of the curious or offices of the devote alike.
