Iris Wildthyme is a transtemporal adventuress who fondly indulges the delusions of several 21st Century writers, who are daft enough to believe she's a fictional character. Gadding about the whole of time and space on her Bus (which never quite seems to reach Putney Common), with her faithful friend Panda (a stuffed toy art critic), Iris rights wrongs, solves crimes and saves the universe, generally while waiting for gin o'clock.
This e-sampler of Iris's adventures, cribbed from four Obverse Books anthologies, is relentless in its sense of fun and excitement. The standout adventure is very clearly "The Delightful Bag" from Paul Magrs, which starts as a lovingly observed pastiche of The Box of Delights before heading into altogether weirder territory with an appearance from the dreaded Mumu Manchu. Chemistry-obsessed Mexican luchador Senor 105 provides a lot of fun in his two appearances in the collection, while George Mann's surprisingly sweet tale of a young girl's dreamscape shows the compassionate side of the plucky explorer.
It should also be noted that these short stories are not exactly short, and each is a fully developed adventure. Iris isn't a lady that can be rushed, unless last orders have been called of course.
If you're new to the adventures of Iris Wildthyme, you need to sort yourself out, really. This sampler is a cost-effective, and sometimes free, way of doing just that!
