this reissue of the obsessed's debut is a timely reminder of how influential and great their legacy was, there are only nine tracks on the studio album but they more than admirably demonstrate scott(wino)weinrichs song writting ability. For those who haven't heard these guys before then basicaly to sum up their sound its standard American blues doom, with a huge nod of the hat to sabbath the tunes on here are soulful and melodic without sacrificing heavyness or power. The live disc however is all about power, this is partly due to the grainy sound quality and also in part to there live brutality.
I would highly recomend this album to anybody that is just getting into doom and for excisting fans this is also a welcome addition for the live tracks.

A must-have 23 Mar. 2001

Scott "Wino" Weinrich is not just the guitar player and vocalist of The Obsessed. To many, he is a god.
Dave Grohl once called him a legend and Wino was one of the first musicians he contacted to record with him on the upcoming Probot project. Scott Reeder, formerly of Kyuss and currently the bassist for Unida, played with Weinrich in one incarnation of The Obsessed during the early 90s and called him awe-inspiring. Fu Manchu, Clutch, Corrosion of Conformity, and even Metallica cite The Obsessed as huge influences on their music, and the members of Fugazi idolize Weinrich so much that his current band, Spirit Caravan, is on their label. This re-release of The Obsessed's self-titled debut full-length is on there as well.
The melodies are perfect, the rhythm is heavy, and the songs are brilliantly written. This is one of the 5 best rock albums of the 1980s, period. If you don't own it, you are not a fan of heavy music. That's all there is to it.

one of the best rock albums of all time 6 Jun. 2003

That is not a typo. The Obsessed's self titled is not only a landmark in the stoner rock genre... it is a classic any metal or classic rock fan should readily embrace. Wino's riffs and vocals are on another level... whether he's pounding out old school Sabbath jams on Ground Out, or playing soul-inflicted grooves (Freedom, Tombstone Highway), this man is doom's reigning king. The main riff in Forever Midnight will own your soul.
The live tracks tacked on to this CD somewhat disrupt the mood, but rock hard nonetheless.. don't think JUST BUY.
for fans of Spirit Caravan, and Hidden Hand... 6 Jun. 2004

this is where it all began... Wino is an underground legend in the realm of sludgy, doom-blues rock with a punk spirit. he has left his stamp on alot of bands over the years. he started out with The Obsessed back in '82 with the original line-up and broke up the band in '86 to join Saint Vitus, and then left S.V. and re-formed the Obsessed in '89 and recorded this self-titled album. this album is a classic piece of work. this is truly Wino at his best. what makes it even better is that it includes a bonus live album from a show they did in '84... if you dig their earlier stuff (with the original line-up), I also highly recommend checking out the 2004 re-issue of the Incarnate compilation album on Southern Lord records, which includes the Sodden Jackal e.p.

This album is a must have. You must purchase any cd that has "Wino" listed in the credits. Ditto on everything the previous reviewer wrote about this killer debut album. I, however, am going to knock it down to 4 stars for the absolute brutal sound quality on the so called "extra tracks". Chances are you'll only listen to them once if you can even make it that far. So buy this cd, but do not get your hopes up for any flashes of brilliance or even enjoyment on the live bonus material.
