4.0 out of 5 stars A good read - great insight into mind of a champion jockey, 9 Sep 2001
By
Noriko Monaghan (Coppell, TX United States) - See all my reviews
Obsessed is a very appropriate title as Richard gives a very honest and slightly shocking account of his single mindedness to become champion jockey. Great anecdotes along the way regarding Duke Nicholson, Martin Pipe and various tales from the weighing room.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, 12 Mar 2001

This review is from: Obsessed: The Autobiography (Hardcover)
This is an honest and slightly disturbing account of a horribly driven personality. For those who long admired the seemingly elegant and effortless skills of this fine jockey, the extraordinary self doubt and almost dismal single mindedness comes as a bit of a shock. And that is before we get to his appalling behaviour during his marriage, with one scene being particularly shocking. Its not all grim though. The great horses he has ridden are brought back to life and there are more than a few decent anecdotes and fine portraits of various racing personailites. A barve book and a excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had read this before now, 14 Feb 2010

Well being bed ridden with flu I got around to reading this book which has been on my shelf since it was purchased from Amazon shortly after being published. I could not put it down - I am a bit of an addict to biographies of sporting people and particularly those in the horse world and this has got to be one of the best and most honest I have read. In so many biographies you feel that something has been left out - either because you read something in the press and it is not included or they are trying to be nice and save the face of family, rivals etc or to come across nicer than what they actually are. Richard was so hard on himself in this book and thanks to the likes of first wife Carol and Adrian McQuire for allowing Richard to recount very personal moments. A lot of the biographies by jockeys are rather boring in that they recollect this race then the next race and so on but Richard didn't do this in his biography. If you havent read it and are interested in racing, or even the drive of a true sportsman read this.
So now I am going to have to read his new book Method in My Madness aren't I?
Another biography of a jockey I enjoyed was Charlie Swan's but it is completely different to Richard's. All the best Richard with whatever goals you set yourself in the future - it would be lovely to see you at a horsey event every now and then if you could bear it.
