Wonderful 9 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
I love these books and had a large collection of them as a girl. They are small enough to take out with you and full of useful information. Easy ways to identify trees and full of interesting facts about them as well. The section in the front gives clear drawings of twigs that help you make a quick identification is very useful.Clear pictures of the trees, leaves, buds and any fruit make this book a must have in my opinion.

The Observer book series are fondly remembered as a quick way of learning the basics. The Observer's Book of Trees is a particularly good example. The book gives detail not normally given in a volume of this size. As well as drawings of the fruit, flower and leaves there are illustrations of how the twigs look in winter. This is invaluable when attempting to identify a tree when the leaves have fallen.

I take my copy in my pocket when walking through woodland and used it to identify trees such as the Field Maple and Crack Willowe that I had previously believed to be other types. There is no better basic guide, there may well be more comprehensive books but none small enough to be portable in a shirt pocket. A wonderful little book.
