Very Oblique Approach, 26 April 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: An Oblique Approach (Belisarius) (Mass Market Paperback)
As a HUGE fan of David Drake, I eagerly anticipated reading this novel. Unfortunately, I was left sadly disappointed. While there were moments of brilliance, I felt the battle scenes stagnant, the characters one dimensional, and the plot irritating and ponderous. It seemed to be a fluffy version of the General series set during the Roman era. The writing style was so mundane that those expecting a David Drake military experience should not waste their money. His name might be on the cover, but the book was definitely not his.

Typical Baen fare: thoroughly enjoyable trash, 2 April 2011
This review is from: An Oblique Approach (Belisarius) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of those books, common in the sub-genre of "alternate history", and also common amongst those published by Baen Books, which despite having all kinds of horrible flaws is great fun to read. It tells a captivating story of good vs evil, has a few well-realised (if somewhat cartoonish) characters, lots of action and exotica, and is a page-turner.
Who cares, then, that it horribly simplifies the history it's meant to diverge from, does nothing to explain the motivations of the bad guys, painting them as being entirely one-dimensional? Who cares that the hero and his gang are oh-so-heroic and over the top, and that for no good reason and without communication good guys thousands of miles apart seem to conveniently come up with broadly similar ideas at the same time?
It's a great read, and probably, like so many others by Baen's authors, is one that I'll return to despite all of that and despite now having the story seared into my brain. And, of course, being a Baen book, it's part of a long series. On to the next ...

Marching to Byzantium - and how to stop it!, 1 July 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: An Oblique Approach (Belisarius) (Mass Market Paperback)
Other people's comments have compared this book to S.M.Stirling's The General series but for me it had more of the flavor of Harry Turtledove's Agent of Byzantium. Except for the niggle that most of the good guys joined forces a little too easily, the plot moved well and with good logic. Having just read Eric Flint's Mother of Demons I enjoyed speculating on which author wrote what and who contributed the historical facts. I look forward to the next in the series.
