Product Description

Product Description

Once listed in the "nice to have" sections of job postings, these days the knowledge of JavaScript is a deciding factor when it comes to hiring web developers. And rightly so. Where in the past we used to have the occasional few lines of JavaScript embedded in a web page, now we have advanced libraries and extensible architectures, powering the "fat-client", AJAX-type rich internet applications.

JavaScript is the language of the browser, but it's also heavily employed in many other environments: server-side programming, desktop applications, application extensions and widgets. It's a pretty good deal: you learn one language and then code all kinds of different applications. While this book has one chapter specifically dedicated to the web browser environment including DOM, events, and AJAX tutorials, the rest is applicable to all the other environments too.

This book treats JavaScript as a serious object-oriented language, showing you how to build robust, maintainable, and powerful libraries and applications. Along the way, we cover many of the recent innovations such as AJAX, JSON, and interesting design and coding patterns. After reading this book, you'll be prepared to ace your JavaScript job interview and even impress with some bits that the interviewer maybe didn't know. You should read this book if you want to be able to take your JavaScript skills to a new level of sophistication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on javaScript I've ever read, 5 Aug 2010
By
Anthony Hunt "hunthunthunt" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Object-Oriented Javascript (Paperback)
I've been working with JavaScript as a client-side/front-end developer for almost a decade and over this time have read a number of books on the language. With purchasing this book I was looking to gain a deeper understanding of the Object Oriented features within JavaScript. Having read the first couple of chapters, I'm pleased to find that it does this exceptionally well. Additionally the book offers a broad, solid foundation in the principles of the language.

So far I've been really impressed with this book: it's concise, lively and readable and manages to convey some sophisticated concepts with exceptional clarity - I thoroughly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply one of the best javascript books out there, 17 July 2011
This review is from: Object-Oriented Javascript (Paperback)
This book has changed my javascript coding confidence once and for all. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 alone are enough for the price of this book. As far as I am concerned, coding in any computer language has some hidden secrets. Most authors will only show you how, but the secrets of why why and why are not always revealed. In this book, the author actually let out of the bag the hidden secrets of javascript. The author's title was a bit limited at first sight. It should have read, 'javascript hidden secrets and object oriented programming'. Man you have changed my javascript coding power. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best programming book i've ever read, 10 July 2011
This review is from: Object-Oriented Javascript (Paperback)
This is an incredible book, probably the best book i've ever read on anything computer related and I've read a lot over the last 15 years. The book has taken me from a very average javascript programmer to an advanced programmer in a short space of time. For me the best thing about it is it teaches you to talk the talk, I'm now very confident in talking with any fellow developer, it also teaches you about best practices and the theory, not just the practical side. I'd actually recommend this to anyone from a complete beginner to somebody who has been using javascript for a while but wants to take it to the next level.
