5.0 out of 5 stars the best programming book i've ever read 10 July 2011
This is an incredible book, probably the best book i've ever read on anything computer related and I've read a lot over the last 15 years. The book has taken me from a very average javascript programmer to an advanced programmer in a short space of time. For me the best thing about it is it teaches you to talk the talk, I'm now very confident in talking with any fellow developer, it also teaches you about best practices and the theory, not just the practical side. I'd actually recommend this to anyone from a complete beginner to somebody who has been using javascript for a while but wants to take it to the next level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply one of the best javascript books out there 17 July 2011
By mansi
This book has changed my javascript coding confidence once and for all. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 alone are enough for the price of this book. As far as I am concerned, coding in any computer language has some hidden secrets. Most authors will only show you how, but the secrets of why why and why are not always revealed. In this book, the author actually let out of the bag the hidden secrets of javascript. The author's title was a bit limited at first sight. It should have read, 'javascript hidden secrets and object oriented programming'. Man you have changed my javascript coding power. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on javaScript I've ever read 5 Aug 2010
I've been working with JavaScript as a client-side/front-end developer for almost a decade and over this time have read a number of books on the language. With purchasing this book I was looking to gain a deeper understanding of the Object Oriented features within JavaScript. Having read the first couple of chapters, I'm pleased to find that it does this exceptionally well. Additionally the book offers a broad, solid foundation in the principles of the language.

So far I've been really impressed with this book: it's concise, lively and readable and manages to convey some sophisticated concepts with exceptional clarity - I thoroughly recommend it!

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was a beginner at Javascript, and learnt the basics from the excellent 'Javascript in Easy Steps'. But too much of my code had flaws in it, and often I didn't understand whether the mistakes I made were due to a fundamental lack of understanding of the language or whether they were due to the quirky way the clever core language has been implemented to interface with the programmer. (I like the idea of Ruby, which is apparently designed to be programmer friendly, though I have never learnt that language.)
Anyway, if you really want to get an understanding of the underlying basics of Javascript this it the book to get. I've purchased a handful of other books, but this one has really helped me.
Short examples of code illustrate the text, and a few exercises at the end of each chapter show you whether you have really grasped the points made.
I've knocked off one point because of indifferent publishing. Better proof reading was required, and the index is far too short. For example, there's no entry under W - not even 'window'!
But if you want to get to a real understanding of how Javascript works, this is the book to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly pitched 20 April 2011
As a reasonably experienced programmer but a newcomer to JavaScript, I found this book perfectly pitched. It's well-written, clear, coherent, logically structured, thorough and complete. It serves as a pretty good introduction to object oriented programming in general as well as being the only book on JavaScript that you'd ever really need. One of the best books on programming I've read, and outstanding value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant book 24 Jan 2011
By rwdrwd
JavaScript, and Front End Development as a whole, is going through truly exciting times at present. As a professional web developer it's important for me to keep up to date and as such this summer I resolved to get to grips with advanced JS. I purchased practically all available books concentrating on OO and implementation of Design Patterns - as it turned out all I needed was the Crockford pamphlet (aka JavaScript - The Good Parts) and this book. Genuinely so good I took it on holiday as relaxation reading :D
