Product Description

Combining fantasy with stark realism, Lee Chang-Dong s (Peppermint Candy, Secret Sunshine) magnificent film is both beautiful and tragic as it explores the theory issue of how people with disabilities are marginalised. Stars Sol Kyung-Gu and Moon So-Ri give their finest performances as the mentally ill ex-con Jong-Do (Sol) who falls for a young woman with cerebral palsy (Moon), would-be lovers who are sidelined by society. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Masterpiece About Disability. 28 Jan 2013
Every so often a film comes along that is so jaw droppingly inspirational that it almost takes the breath away. This is one such film. Made back in 2002 it was only released on DVD in the UK in 2009. The Telegraph film critic Tim Robey chose it as his first film in his new column "Tim Robey recommends", where he champions those less watched and unappreciated films deserving of better. He certainly hit the nail on the head with this little gem!

This was the last film directed by Lee Chang-dong before his spell as South Korea's Minister of Culture. It proved to be a critical success and won a number of prizes at film festivals, which sadly did not mean the public flocked to see it. The story of a relationship between a man with learning difficulties and a woman with cerebal palsy, not being one to ignite the imagination of the public.

Sol Kyung-gu plays the young man just out of prison who shows strong signs of aspberger's in his obsessive behaviour. Due to family circumstances he develops a relationship with a severely disabled girl played quite brilliantly by Moon So-ri. It turns out that both of them are victims of their own family's shameful actions. Beautifully written by the director himself the film is beautifully observed in a non patronising way that shames big Hollywood films like "Rain Man". Most insightful is the way the couple are treated as outcasts by a misguided and prejudiced society. There is a touching restaurant scene that says it all!

The highlight of the film is the outstanding performance by Moon So-ri, which is every bit as good as Daniel Day Lewis's benchmark performance in "My Left Foot". Totally and utterly believable. This is a wonderful tale of how exploitation turns to need and later love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb 11 May 2010
By catfips
Excellent and quite unsettling at times. Both actors, Sol and Moon, give superb performances as mentally and physically disabled characters in a quite touching and (some would say) controversial story. Knew very little about the film beforehand (in a Korean DVD library and not able to read Hangul). Thoroughly advise watching this. Also keep an eye out for quite a few of Sol Kyung-gu's movies, eg. Peppermint Candy, Public Enemy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing,honest,challenging Korean film. 22 Nov 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film alone proves Lee Chang-Dong to be a great Director,to rank along side Kim Ki-duk,and one of the best Korean films I have ever seen!Like Kim Ki-duk,he is n't afraid to shock us ,or challenge our conventions and attitudes ,this time, to disabled people. We do n't expect, for example,to be viewing sex between a man with learning difficulty and a girl with cerebral palsy, but they are the hero and heroine of this tale. The two main leads act their roles wonderfully, and the director delivers two wonderful flights of fancy ,in which the girl day dreams about how she would flirt with him,if she was able bodied, suddenly the actress becomes able bodied, and fantasy merges with reality,to great artistic effect, and much charm.Bold film making, which offers a refreshingly honest, and respectful view of sexual relations between two disabled people ,their coming to terms with it and the problems of acceptance and their discrimination by the outside world,a classic for the future!
