I too was initially impressed with the garlic press, but was irritated by the need to remove the plastic grip of the handle to avoid stinky water seepage in the utensil drawer! This is a problem with all the Good Grips utensils I've come across (and what are the odds you'll eventually lose the odd grip?). And my press also snapped after a few months of use; that's what you get for using cheap, fragile metal. Of course this leaves you with a couple of spare grips for when you lose those off your other Good Grips utensils .....

Sorry. I would like to be able to recommend this item but I can't. It is really not worth the money. I bought it because it sounded good and I liked the idea of the 'self cleaning' bit but in reality it is very wasteful as most of the garlic clove is not pressed through. If you have a weak grip don't buy it as it is very hard to squeeze the garlic through probably because the handles are quite short. I had mine for about a year when it snapped in two. Luckily when I contacted the supplier I got a full refund. A cheap press bought from Tesco was much more efficient at crushing garlic cloves.

This press is unsuitable for any purpose. Specifically, it cannot actually press a clove of garlic -- the majority escapes around the edges of the press head. I threw mine away, and you will as well, should you foolishly buy one.

This works very well as a garlic press, and it's chunky and initially seems robust. However, very quickly the plastic grip covers come unstuck, making it trouble to wash. You have to remove them and dry them separately. Otherwise you'll have some mouldy old sink water splashing over your garlic creation when you least suspect it.
Worse still, after about a year and a half of moderate use, the lever part broke completely, splitting it in half and rendering it unusable. I wonder how long Delia's lasted?

This broke two months after I bought it, at the pivot, which is a problem I've had with a few presses now. Also, it did not press particularly well. As another reviewer has mentioned, it largely escapes round the edges.

I'll be continuing my hunt for a garlic press that can stay the distance!

I thought I had found the answer to one of my life problems, a garlic crusher that could do its job when I bought my first OXO crusher. It lasted 6 months but foolishly I bought another and my 8 stone wife snapped that 6 months later. It looks good and feels like it should last but is made of a cheap alloy that is totally unsuitable. I tried to contact OXO after the first one broke and sent two emails which were not answered. Avoid!

The product looks good, and the idea of the self cleaning device is good, but there is one fundamental problem. The plunger part does not press all the way down onto the perforated part, leaving a gap of about 2mm. This means that most of the clove is just squashed flat into this space. I planned to take mine back for a refund but never got around to it!

I've tried various garlic presses on the market and finally found the Good Grips one. It's heavy duty and even has a self cleaning plate. However, after about a year, it broke so I contacted the dealer. They informed me that they've improved the garlic press and sent me a new one and I haven't had a problem with it since. I was disappointed that my garlic press broke but because of the service they've provided, I decided to give them a 2nd chance. Since then I've bought a few more products and so far, those products have performed beautifully.
