Very practical and easy to use. A good buy at this price for a quality product. Useful for older people who have limited strength.

Greetings from Kentucky from Jack Sprat. This is the best corkscrew I've ever owned. Sturdy and a joy to use. Also, my wife finds it very easy to operate, unlike many she has struggled with. So pleased am I with this product that I've just purchased one on Amazon UK for my friend in England. I'm sure it will give him years of pleasure.

Works perfectly and is easy on your hands 29 July 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have owned a few different style corkscrews, and the wing-style is my favorite. This model by OXO is the best so far.

It's hefty - much heavier than my other wing-style corkscrew. The manufacturer says it is die-cast zinc. The finish is smooth and shiny and quite attractive. The only plastic on this corkscrew is a plastic liner inside the bottom where the corkscrew sits on the bottle top. It is to protect the glass lip of the wine bottle. The screw part is coated in a non-stick material and it easily glides into even plastic wine "corks". Other than the heft, my two favorite features are the large, soft rubber turning knob and the see-through window.

Most other wing-style corkscrews have a metal turning handle and can really hurt your hands and fingers! This knob is truly ergonomic, something OXO is known for, and makes for pain-free uncorking. The window lets you see that the cork is coming out.

While most folks buying a corkscrew know how to use one, be aware there are no directions for using it on or in the packaging.

Note: although the manufacturer's description mentions a foil cutter and says it can be stored in the knob, I believe this is an error and is actually describing a different model. There is no foil cutter, nor does the knob open up for storing anything. Likewise, some of the reviews here I believe are for a different model, since they mention a foil cutter and plastic parts.

This is a fine tool and would likely please anyone looking for a wing-style corkscrew. I think it would be especially appreciated by persons with arthritis or low hand strength because of the wonderful turning knob.

Love it! 31 Jan 2008

I don't know what the other review was doing but I had no problem at all getting it to work. It works great and I think it works better than any one I have ever had. I even bought some for New Year's eve party gifts.

Nice and solid, free standing. 28 July 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I was a bit concerned after reading the other reviews that this item wouldn't hold up to the OXO standards I've come to expect but from the time I picked it up out of the shipping box I felt much better. It's very heavy, it's definitely solid metal. You should note however that it's not steel, if you notice on the package there is a TM next to Steel, it's one of OXO's lines, not designating that this item is stainless steel, the back of the package actually says that it's "sturdy die cast zinc construction". It does have a very shiny silver finish, time will tell how it holds up to wear and tear.

It functions the same as any other winged corkscrew I've owned and used, the corkscrew itself is nice and wide which in my experience means less likely of pulling out of a extremely well placed rock and less chance you'll have to reinsert it and possibly break apart the cork.

The main reason I'm using this to replace my still functional off brand of similar design is that I have small children (and a clumsy husband) and in our new home we only have one big drawer for utensils. My old corkscrew protruded from the bottom even when the wings were down meaning a sharp dangerous point was just waiting form someone to dig through the drawer and get jabbed. The OXO version not only is contained when the wings are down but it's also free standing, which means I can just leave it sitting in the corner of the counter where it is easy to find! (though I have to admit, it looks a bit like an angry shiny mantis sitting there LOL)

The standard OXO grip is appreciated and all in all I'm very happy with it, hope the finish holds up to standard use and will update if it doesn't.

Works okay but beware it's HEAVY and clunky 25 Sep 2011

I don't have complaints about the functionality of the corkscrew, but people should be aware just how heavy and clunky this opener really is. Mine will probably only get used when someone else opens the wine, since my small, semi-arthritic hands don't handle it well. And as others have stated, it comes in that AWFUL packaging that seems meant to frustrate the heck out of anyone trying to open it. OXO, think about putting this one in a box.

My 90-Year-Old Dad Loves This! 15 Aug 2011
By Steven James - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
While I am not a big wine drinker, my 90-year-old father still enjoys the occasional snort of Greek wine. He has had his former corkscrew for about the past 50 years and it pains me (and him) to watch him struggle with it. He consistently broke off pieces of cork and wrestled with that thing for years. When this OXO Steel Winged Corkscrew arrived in the mail he was hesitant to use it...he hates anything new. When I handed it to him he said "this baby weighs a ton!" He handed it to me and I had to agree it had considerable heft. It felt substantial, which I liked. When he started to open his wine bottle with no grunts or complaints about his arthritic hands I knew we had a winner.

Why it never dawned on me before to replace his ancient corkscrew is beyond me, but lo and behold, it's better late than never. He LOVES this corkscrew and shows it to all the neighbors when they drop by with snacks for him. I can't rave enough about this device. It has made an old man really excited about opening a wine bottle...that is testimony enough for me. It should be for you, too.
