The device is really cool to play with initially, let me know the oven cost 5p an hour to run, the kettle 10p, all the lights in the house 1.5p.

But after a more in depth play I realised the device isn't as responsive or accurate as I first through, quite alot of devices dont even register on the device or it takes along time to do so. It doesn't seem to matter if I have 5 lights on or 10 it shows the same reading, if i have multiple device plugged into an extension having one or many on does not seem to change the reading.

Whether these faults are unique to this device in particular or if its just systematic of the underlying technology i cannot say.

This is a well made, fun item. Easy to set-up and use, and means hours of running round the house turning things on and off to see what uses what!

The kettle and dishwasher are a big no-no now in our house!!!

The batteries may not last that long, and the money you save will not be exactly mind-blowing, but it gives a good insight into just how much power everything uses.

Worth the money, but not for saving the planet!

As noted by another reviewer, the Owl units have poor resolution, of the order of 100w, so lights and low power devices don't register on their own. More importantly, this, like the bigger Owl, and any device that only uses a clamp-on current sensor, measures Volt-Amps, not power (breaching trade-description/advertising standards), because it cannot take account of power-factor. This causes huge errors on anything with an induction motor, especially fridges and freezers, which have a power factor of around 0.33 and so read three time too high. Induction hobs also cause problems, even when turned off. Mine reduces my apparent total power on the Owl by around 300W when I just plug it in, because it's mains filter capacitor corrects the fridge and freezer power factor! Crazy stuff, which I've attempted to explain better on the page for the bigger Owl. Your supply meter measures true power and nothing less would be acceptable to supply companies. Excellent for monitoring solar generation though.

This device has had, and seems to be continuing to have a good impact on the houshold. Electricity in our home is used to excess (we all agree) so walking past the monitor in the kitchen makes everyone say - "is something on?" We've come to realise that the lowest consumption is going to be around 800W/hr - seeing anything over 1 makes people think - over 2, what's going on - and although often it's the washing machine, or iron, or toaster - sometimes, it's an outdoor floodlight left on overnight, or other gizmos - and we now are all more aware. I doubt it's going to make huge reductions, but just being aware when your usage is too high can only be good.

Fitting wise - the clip needs to simply be fastened around the live cable going into the meter. Mines tricky to get to, but I could do it one-handed. That's it. Done! Anyone can attach it, so connection to live wires is needed - the clamp just goes around the outside of the grey cable, and 'sniff's your usage through the plastic insulation.

This little device is easy to install and use and has made us really aware of our energy consumption. It has even prompted us to make changes such as using more energy efficient light bulbs and not using the shower for too long! Great buy and worth the money.

i have now used this monitor for 4 weeks and have found it very easy to use. after an initial mistake of attaching the clip to the wrong electric cable and finding the monitor didnt work, it didn't take me long to realise it was to be attached to the other remaining cable, having done that the monitor was set to the cost per unit and has worked very well since. at 72 i found it was easy even for me to use

Simple bit of kit, got my settings wrong the first time I used it which lead to a few ear bending's for the kids "look at the cost of this"! But then realised it was £3.50 an hour not £35 an hour once set up properly. It does however help you understand what uses the most energy in house. Mode switch at the back needs to be redesigned and moved I keep changing modes when I pick it up.

Great little device.
Does exactly what it is supposed to.
I've fitted it in our caravan, so when we are on a low current supply, we can see what power we're using and don't overload the EHU bollard.
Had to be battery powered at BOTH the transmitter and the receiver due to its location.
Works a treat!
