Product Description

Colour Name: style1

The 6-In-1 Educational Solar -- Robotic Kit is an excellent beginner building kit designed to teach how solar power is used to drive a small motor. Children use the 21 snap together parts (no tools required) to build six different working models including an airboat, car, windmill, puppy, and two different airplanes. Solar building kits teach children the benefits of solar energy, while they create a toy that is both fun to play with and requires no batteries. Educators, science museums, and hobbyists will surely appreciate the durability, educational value, and endless hours of amusement for children and adults too! This is a beginner kit recommended for ages 10 and up.

I bought this kit for my 10 year old daughter who has dreams of building robots and other inventions. From the photos of the kit I figured this would be made of little modules that snap together, so that she could have fun making each of the six solar powered robots.

My main complaint is that the parts are so badly designed that they do not "snap together". I had to file some components in the motor unit down to make them fit, others could be forced but I was seriously worried they would break and there is no way they are coming apart again! The "legs" and "tail" for the solar dog (the first and so far only one we made) are wedged in place such that they have a tendency to pop back out like corks from a bottle. To add insult to injury, the first time she brought the toy outside to get it powered by sunlight the "tail" popped off and was lost.

Out of the box it is like a traditional plastic model kit, where the parts need to be gently twisted off the struts and sharp edges filed away (file not included). There was also a small bag with wires, springs, metal rods, solar panel and a tiny tiny motor. There are no extra parts or wires.

The first thing you have to do is build the solar panel and the motor unit. The solar panel was simple enough, but constructing the motor required quite a LOT of care so as not to break tiny parts - it is really small! I ended up constructing the motor for my daughter as there was no way she could force the parts together (it took a LOT of pressure) while keeping fiddly wires and springs sitting level in their housings.

The solar unit requires bright, direct sunlight. I have solar powered calculators that work in dim rooms but the motor on this toy will not budge unless it has clear-blue-sky-blinding-sun-light!

My son was bought this last year for Christmas, he was 6 at the time and so needed a little help to put it together but we had great fun doing it together. I love the fact that you could choose what to make, once you make one item you can see how it works for a few days and then take it apart and make one of the other toys/gadgets. My son took it to school and the teacher showed it to the class. Although once you've made them all there isn't any lasting value, he got more hours of play out of this than some other toys that last much longer.

This was a very disappointing toy, fiddly to assemble and instructions that did not not follow on. When we eventually got it assembled the solar panel could only power up in the brightest of sunlight - not too good for a Christmas present!

A promising idea, but several component parts are small & fiddly to put together. One key component fell apart during the first stage (making the gear box) and would presumably need to be soldered together again. I can't imagine many children putting these together. The product is considerably more fragile than the images seem to convey.

I bought this for my Granddaughter's next school holiday expecting the 6 kits to be similar size and quality to the Kinder egg toys. They are actually much more substantial and functional
The pieces are solidly moulded in 2 (Airfix style) plastic frames - even the scrap borders (apparently called 'sprues' if it matters) are about 3mm diameter. The largest (boat/hovercraft hull) piece is almost 11 x 5.5 and about 3.5 cm high, the prop blades 8.5 long, the plane support 12.5 high and the arm 13.5cm long. The plane kit will be a good sized table-top model you will want to enjoy for a while before dismantling.
Assembly instructions are diagrammatic and better suited to young eyeballs, but clear enough in content. I will probably photocopy/enlarge instructions for each kit in advance. Construction starts with gearbox assembly and goes on to wiring the solar module. Then on to the fun, in order of difficulty.
The downsides next- only one kit can be made at a time, as solar module and other parts are reused. A trip to Maplins may be on the cards if you get hooked and need more components, or hobby tools. Or even to buy more kits. The other problem will be keeping this gift hidden from the engineer Grandad until the school holidays.

There are some very negative reviews about this product. Firstly everyone should be aware that the images of the toys are rendered images from 3D models (not to be confused with 3D printing) and not photographs. Had people been aware of this then perhaps they wouldn't feel so disgusted by the fact that the toys can be left with odd bumps after removing the parts from the Airfix-style plastic molds. Those with experience of Airfix kits will simply cut/file the bumps down and move on with their lives.

The solar panel works well, direct sunlight is obviously the best condition and will also run on a bright day, depending on the weight of the rotor. For example the dog's tail might spin but the wind turbine blades won't. It will even work under a light bulb. Make sure it's an incandescent bulb though, not an LED light or an energy saving bulb.

Another complaint concerns the build quality. I personally (having put together 3 of these sets) would say the build quality is very good considering the size of the parts. You just need to be careful, plastic bends easily. They are small; the solar unit itself (the dog's head) is 50mm x 32mm x 9mm.

The instructions make sense if you're capable of reading. The size of the font doesn't help and I'm 29, so reading glasses, if you need them, are a must.
It's obvious that this set is not LEGO. I don't why it's listed that it's made by LEGO but it's not. It also isn't LEGO when talking about the construction of the toys. These aren't simple, snap to, brick on brick toys. There are some fiddly moments, mainly connecting the wires in the spring coils. Parents, don't be put off, if your child has some intelligence, is careful and focuses then these toys can be built no problem.
