I have an American TV in France, and wanted to watch Freesat on a Humax receiver which outputs a PAL signal. I bought this and it very nicely converts the PAL to NTSC for the HDMI. Previously I thought HDMI was immune to the PAL/NTSC issue, but it is the frame rate frequency, 50Hz vs. 60Hz, which is the problem. Works well, but the picture seems a little low contrast and redish, but I think that may be because my satellite needs to be adjusted slightly.

fantastic converter 27 Mar 2012

since I have experience of two converters before.
I'm a bit worry about its quality of conversion.

old products generally have the problem due to resolution 486 NTSC, 586 PAL...
and hertz conversion(50|60Hz) as well.
there always be losing 5~10% of its original quality.
( this is what engineer says.. they believe there is no 100% compatible conversion.
I got this information 5 years ago. so no long valid statement I guess :) )

However, this modern upscale product overcome those limitations
and gives 720,1080 HDMI output which is absolutely fantastic.

when my wife and daughter saw this conversion, simply reacted as "wow!!"
Now they can enjoy its original capability (HD!!)

Recently my old converter got out of order and
bought other brand which gave me shaking text screen with flickering for
fast movement.
( I've returned this product which cause eye fatigue )

luckily, I found this product from amazon
and happy to highly recommend someone has NTSC LCD TV in PAL world.

Poor interface prevent it from being perfect - Recommended though 19 Dec 2011

The device does what it should and with good quality, and that's the important thing.
I am using it in Israel to bridge between a DVBT STB and a US version of Panasonic Viera HDTV. Now everything is great and I am happy with this buy. But (the big tip is bellow)....

I managed to set it up initially quit quickly, without recognizing that I had more luck than brains :). An electrical power interruption changed that, as settings got reset and I had to set it up again.
I couldn't, and contacted Orei tech support. They were very helpful explaining how to use their poor interface (a big word for 3 buttons) to set up the device. I should mention that none of this explanation is anywhere to be found in the device literature (another big word). They promised the next batch will be more user friendly...

The issue:
There are 3 buttons on the device: one for type of connectivity you use (composite\HDMI), second for output-resolution (720p/1080p), third for format (PAL/NTSC).
There is a special way of using those buttons and if you don't know it you can't use the device:
Single press on any button is good for displaying the current relevant setting on the screen (that is if you see anything on the screen, otherwise you are working blind until you get the setting right and be able to see anything).
To actually change the mode (on each button) you need press the button twice and quickly (slowly will just show the information twice). That's the big secret. It's a shame I almost throw the device away because of a thing like that.

Orei XD-990, is an awesome product... 15 Dec 2011

Soooo, I got to the UK with a beautiful 50" Samsung plasma TV ready to go. Contacted Sky, ordered the best HD package available. Set up was on Thanksgiving Day. I was all prepared to eat turkey and tune in to my first NFL game in over a month. Imagine the disappointment when the Sky installer told me my NTSC TV would not work without a converter... NTSC? PAL? What? Who? Huh??? (Very disappointing Thanksgiving afternoon) So the next day I rush to the Sky store on base to inquire about this converter. 189 pounds! What? That's $310! For each room/TV! So I jumped on Amazon and low and behold, the Orei XD-990. Amazon delivered it to me in less than a week and it's been working flawlessly since installed. 90 bucks well spent. Its really simple to connect, HDMI in from cable box, HDMI out to TV. Simple. If you are headed to the UK or any other country broadcasting in PAL, make sure you have a multi-system TV or order one or more of these BEFORE you depart. Lesson learned...

A Wonder Box 8 Dec 2011

I was able to use my NTSC VIZIO LED TV in India and convert PAL based 50 Hz transmission to 1080i 60 Hz. This works flawless out of box. This is small but you can tell it uses all high quality metal parts not plastic. This is also cheapeast one in the market, the competitors product were selling more than 2 to 3 times the price. I am very happy with the purchase the video quality on my TV is better than what i get even in US using my HD TV.
