orb 1 July 2003
orb is unlike most 3d real time strategy games because you can move verticale and horrizontal threw the map which i think is quite intreasting. the game looks really well, the secenry looks just fantastic it looks like you are really in space. the battles in orb are very intreasting because some of your ships (eg the fighters) are fast enough to dodge the enemy fire while firing apon the enemy. my overall opinion on orb is that the game is very good.

A good 3D space strategy game. If you liked homeworld, you’ll probably enjoy this one. Good story(if not a little strange), nice graphics, and some cool ships. What more can you ask for?

What is it with some games designers? As soon as better kit becomes available it seems they immediately start writing for the improved specs in the apparent and, if so, delusional belief that it automatically makes for a better game. No chance, people: all it does is lead to flabby code, week-long load times (slight exaggeration) and games that those of us with limited resources (financial as well as system) can't run on our PCs.

My point: you need at least a Pentium III processor *and* 128 Meg of RAM for ORB to run properly on your machines, folks. And then apparently it still takes a week to load (there's that slight exaggeration again...) unless you download the patches from the makers too...

And please don't give me any grief about how "most people" have "at least" that level of spec. on their systems these days: 90% of the strategy games still being produced -CivIII, MoO3 etc.- will run on lower spec machines, and most look and play fine. If ORB doesn't run on lower spec machines, it's because someone somewhere in the design process got *lazy*, and end of story. Flashy animations and flashier 3D FX do not necessarily a good game make. But then, I wouldn't know if ORB's a good game or not -I couldn't run it on my ageing-and-unlikely-to-be-upgraded-anytime-soon PC!! >Grrr!<
