Book Description

This is another novel by EM Delafield's, author of the beloved Provincial Lady series. One of her earlier novels, this richly amusing book focuses principally on the generation gap between those who grew up as Victorians, and the modern generation whose values have been shaped by the devastating experience of the first World War, and had been considered among the most thought-provoking novels of the 1920s.

Owen Quintillian has spent two years fighting on the Western Front and “ many months in hospital with shell-shock”. After a further stretch of active service in Mesopotamia, he returns to England, and the home of his old tutor, Canon Morchard, a monster of selfishness who manipulate his family by a form of moral blackmail – they are terrified of inspiring the pain he expresses when they cross him in the slightest particular..

This is terrible even by the standards of the 1920s. It wouldn't stand a chance of publication today. Victorian old parson family force of character, and Delafield makes out that this is a good thing.

I'm a fan of Delafield, and this chronicle of how the generations before and after WWI were alienated from each other and tried to find some understanding of each other is right up my alley. Some may find the character of the Canon just too tiresome, but he was so beautifully rendered in all his sometimes-tedious glory and piety, I couldn't stop reading. The detached and priggish main character is also a bit of a trial sometimes, but again, the uncompromising realness of all of the limited people who populate this novel is the book's great strength.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good characters and one of her stronger novels. 29 Nov. 2014

I really enjoyed this, and I'm often quite torn on her novels, being a fan of her diaries. It's not happy, and at first you dislike the 'Optimist", but then as the book goes on, you begin to like him. You also begin to feel less sorry for the children....as being adults it is pointed out it is their choice on how to live their lives (and they manage to do so, some poorly some well). The religious aspect is interesting as Delafield herself had entered a convent at a young age. In the end, the "optimist" of the story gains your sympathy....and you see a bit of why religion plays a big part in helping one through life, and not the fundamentalism of today which is so focused on ME....but a more outward looking religion of hope and helping.
