Simon got into music as a child through the telly. He would sit with his tape recorder at the ready to capture the theme tune to "Tales Of The Unexpected" but turn off before old Roald uglied up proceedings. Sneaking into the room containing his sisters forbidden piano he would plink and plonk trying to work out his favourite ads and then embellish them in his own way. As a teenager, "I picked up the guitar and went at it the same way - epic sessions of twatting about in my room with effects pedals and drum machines." Many a musical career has got no further, so we can only suppose that talent intervened, as Simon is now a proficient player of many different instruments, all of them self-taught.
At 18, Simon felt stifled by the "small minded town" he had grown up in and moved to Brighton, mainly because he had mates there and liked the atmosphere and because "no one is from Brighton. Everyone has washed up here."
It was here that he started to move away from the bands of his teen years and start working with computers. "Computers just create a means of production," he says. "I use samplers to take the best part of a recording I've made and stretch it out for five minutes. I use a lot of sounds I create myself and put them through the machines. You can still be musical when there is heavy programming in a track. Its all about having a good ear for a tune and knowing how to get it across."
And while he whiled away three years at art college, Green started putting together the pieces of music that would eventually become his debut album. Playing them to local start-up label Tru Thoughts main-man Rob Luis (something of a legend in Brighton clubland), Bonobo found a kindred spirit and an outlet for what he was doing.
Over the next year and a half, Bonobo released a string of tunes with the label that would make his reputation. Starting with his contribution to the "When Shapes Join Together" compilation, Green then released "Terrapin," which caught the ear of Mr Scruff and hence first brought the young producer to the attention of Ninja Tune. But it was with his debut album, "Animal Magic" that Green firmly established himself amongst the leaders of "the new school of down-tempo pioneers" (Later). On a small and enthusiastic label, the record built a fanbase through word of mouth and personal recommendation. Unsurprisingly, majors and some of the biggest indies came sniffing round and Green and his friends at Tru Thought were aware that it was time to raise the game. They opted, though, for a label with a similar outlook and attitude (and also the home of Greens friend and at the time fellow Brighton resident Amon Tobin) - Ninja Tune.
Since then, things have been busy. Tru Thoughts released a compilation of b-sides and remixes after Simon found a bootleg of exactly that in a record shop in Brighton. Green has toured all over the world, including three rapturously received slogs round North America. Oh, and hes been making his new record, "Dial M For Monkey": "I think it flows well as a whole piece. The first album was a collection of tracks that I had built up over a few years where as this time I've made an album from start to finish." Which, in his understated way, hints at how the new Bonobo record moves and develops not just as a selection of singles but as one large piece of music, a suite if you want to get pretentious about it, or a journey through an imaginary landscape.

More Monkey Magic,
This review is from: ONE OFFSREMIXES AND B_ SIDES (Audio CD)
Not sure what inspired this collection of remixes and b-sides - perhaps Bonobo is about to jump ship from Tru Thoughts (Ninja Tune-bound?), whatever - this is what anyone who has heard Animal Magic wants: more. You'll recognise the excellent remix of Turtle from a certain mobile ad (hate it when that happens) and be inadvertently attracting dogs with its hook for weeks. Only two tracks from AM are remixed and both Quantic and Jon Kennedy put in good shows (although neither are improvements on the originals). The Bonobo remixes are all quite lovely - Four Ton Mantis being a favourite of mine (quite a radical departure from the original). Highlight of the album for me tho is Scuba which comes on like Harry Palmer stoned out in a kebab house. Most ambient/ jazz/ electronica acts around at the moment (to find your nearest one swing that kitten) would kill to make a debut album like this, let alone a 'b' sides and remixes one, and at under a tenner you can't go wrong. New album please Bonobo!

effortlessly captivating; Bonobo is on the short list,

If Simon Green (Bonobo) made indie British rock he'd have been on a half dozen magazine covers by now. But, he dance music, downtempo fare at that; hardly the stuff of mass recognition. As for Remixes and B-sides, whether critical clamoring or a rumored label jump prompted it, fans who wisely snapped up his debut Animal Magic are given material far better than what that title may imply. Led by a slow Dixie whistle and cello, shimmering electronics in the background, his spin on Pilote's "Turtle" may be the freshest chillout tune this year. A simple melody yet effortlessly catchy, it's an example to the hundreds of tunes flooding the market that, while politely programmed, fail to leave a discernable impression. Mechanical Me's "Beachy Head" nearly tops that, a melancholy ballad with captivating vocals processed like a 50s era record - the stuff of comps for sure (think Royksopp "Sparks") - but with an extra dusting of magic. Other efforts prove similarly amicable; the keyboard pips of "Dismantling Frank," heavy drums anchoring "The Sicilian," and the crackling vinyl pops, horns, and castanets of sterling closer "Scuba," a foray into breakbeat. Soulful, sweeping soundscapes are explored throughout, a style some artists (cough, Moby, cough) merely attempt to emulate. To be fair, remixes of "The Plug" and "Dinosaurs" offer a new spin but nothing startling, while a rework of Amon Tobin's over-indulgent "Fout Ton Mantis" provides the lone stumbling block. Still, there's an ocean of jazzbo/instrumental/downtempo ... bands playing similar material, with very few with musical ideas worth sharing. Bonobo is on the short list.

Refreshingly different and funky....,

Bonobo seem to turn anything they touch into gold. After buying their first album (Animal Magic), I went out searching for more... Up came this!!If you havent heard of Bonobo before, then this is a must buy. It allows the listener to chillout and relax, whilst maintaining an unmistakable air of interest. My favorite for this album varies according to the day, as it seems to reflect a series of new and fresh feelings with every listen. To compare this album it would be to Zero 7, Air to name just a few. A must buy for the chillout listener!!
